MET Madness

It’s that time again…

Time for my favorite fashion event of the year. It’s my version of prom! Last year’s event was held in honor the (then) recently deceased Alexander McQueen and the red carpet was amazing.

5:36 p.m: Dolce & Gabbana dress and Christian Louboutin shoes, all set for the gala.

This year there were so many gorgeous women on the red carpet – fashion insiders, celebrities, models, actresses – that it was hard to narrow down my favorites.

Hollywood Dolls:

{Rooney stuck with what’s worked for her over the last few months of red carpet appearances. Dramatic. Bold. Givenchy! There was lots of white on the red carpet this year so her lacy black gown stood out all the more.}

{Bombshell alert! Amber Heard’s Zac Posen gown was striking and oozed with old school glamour. Love!}

{Elegant but eye-catching at the same time, that’s what Giambattista Valli does best!}

{Sleek & sexy. Gwyneth Paltrow put women half her age to shame in this fierce little Prada cocktail number. I love the embellishments here – the pocket on the dress, the low-cut back, and the jewel-encrusted stilettos.}

DiannaAgron

{This was a great choice for her. A beautifully cut dress in the perfect color, soft, sweet makeup, and loose curls framing her face. Just stunning.}

{Kirsten Dunst has long been a fan of Rodarte and they served her well again last night with this one-of-a-kind retro inspired dress. The look was definitely unique, but I think she looked phenomenal!}

{I’m always excited to see what Miss Cate will show up on the red carpet in, and she didn’t disappoint last night. Alexander McQueen with black feathers and a fishtail train? Only a few women in the world could pull this off.}

{Nina has been stepping up her game on the red carpet the last year or so, really making an impact, and this Donna Karen gown is another great choice.}

{Wow. Renée Zellweger usually wears Carolina Herrera but this Pucci gown is stunning! The low back and dramatic train are gorgeous.}

{Wow. Just. Wow. Love it all. Color, fit, fabric, accessories. Fierce!}

{Claire Danes’s sexy white wrap dress was perfectly complemented by her teal envelope clutch and sleek updo. Well done.}

{Bombshell! Camilla Belle was a vision in a sexy silver Ralph Lauren gown. Simple and elegant. I like that she went minimal on the accessorizing.}

Model Muses:

{When I think about the MET Gala this is what I picture. Daring fashion. Avant garde styles. Fashion with a capital F. Well done ladies, well done!}

ChanelImanTomFord

{Drama Drama Drama. Chanel Iman and her sexy plus one were all about black & white drama.}

{Coco’s brightly colored vintage Givenchy and matching pink curls were definitely eye-catching. Are you a fan?}

AmberValletta

{Veteran model Amber Valletta’s Prada gown was perfect, with both color blocking and pleats, it was right on trend for Spring!}

{I think Constance may have stolen Tilda’s dress, but that’s ok because she killed in it! Love the color and fabric combinations, the silky teal with the royal blue pleats are perfection!}

THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART'S Spring 2012 COSTUME INSTITUTE Benefit Gala

{Lace, asymmetrical silhouette, and brilliant pink – Jason Wu definitely wanted Miss Karlie Kloss to stand out this evening!}

{The face of Burberry Body rocked her long-sleeved, retro Burberry gown. Only Rosie could make sequined stripes look this good!}

candice-swanepoel-met-ball-2012-rag-bone-dress

{Victoria’s Secret stunner Candice Swanepoel positively glowed in her custom cobalt & black lace Rag & Bone gown. J’adore!}

And my favorite – Diane Kruger. I know she’s an actress but I always think of her a model. She’s got phenomenal taste and a flawless sense of style, something I usually associate with models who spend their time surrounded by fashion editors, photographers, and designers.

{DRAMA. Purple feathers, a train, and killer jewels? Miss Diane clearly wanted to make an entrance last night. I hate hate hate to find fault with her, but I think an updo would have been the perfect final touch to this.}

{Source, Source & Source}

And what would I have worn?

I narrowed it down to these choices over the weekend. And these choices clearly show my multiple personalities. Part of me wants to go for old-school, golden age glamour, and the other part of me thinks that an event like this one calls for no holds barred, serious drama.

{This gown in Valentino red would be a fabulous choice – Bold but classic and flattering.}

Source

Or something a little more dramatic and high-impact.

{I love the drama of Zac Posen gowns and this is a phenomenal color. If it had a keyhole or open back to offset the high neck and cap sleeves I’d be all over this!!!}

What was your favorite dress this year? What would you have picked for yourself?

NYFW Fall 2012 – Street Style & Front Row Fashion

One of the best parts of Fashion Week is getting the chance to see what all the fashion insiders (designers, models, editors, celebrities, buyers, photographers, writers…) wear to the shows and the looks they put together for the seemingly endless parade of events, dinners, parties, store openings, and galas over the course of the week. As breathtaking as the runway shows are, the vast majority of the looks aren’t exactly “street ready,” so that makes it especially fun to see how real people can wear the types of pieces we see on the runways.

Mr. Kors had QUITE the fan club in his front row - Fashion icon Angelica Houston, actresses Debra Messing and Paula Patton, gorgeous newcomer Amber Heard and new mom Jessica Alba.

Ashley Smith & Lindsey Wixson at the Annabelle Dexter Jones x Faith Connexion Dinner. I like Ashley's hair and Lindsay's dress.

Damn she's good! I can't decide if I love the chic, twisted burnt orange frock or the layered gold & gem necklace more... Necklace I think! No, bag!

Great blue dresses in the front row of BCBG from Giada De Laurentis & Maria Menounous, really beautiful, flattering colors.

Stylist Robert Verdi looked the part in various shades of grey and a stunning two-tone coat. Um... Can I borrow your bag?

Sort of reminds me of my grey look… But prettier! 🙂

I always look forward to seeing Poppy, she consistently wears something fun and different, no cookie-cutter nonsense for this girl! So what does she wear to the Richard Chai show? Low-key skinnies, a cute Fair Isle sweater & booties. Casual but chic.

Jennifer Nettles was a site for sore eyes at the Peter Som Fall 2012 Show. I love that she was February-appropriate in great tweed & a faux leather pencil skirt, but the bright cobalt pumps stole the show & moved her look up to perfect for the front row!

Amazing. No words.

Who wore the Prabal Gurung floral satin pants better? Zoe Saldana above or Joan Smalls?

Caroline Sieber's look was picture perfect, I especially love the mixing of similarly colored patterns & fabrics. Very chic.

Hanneli does it again, looking impossibly chic in a striped T and an upside down Acne skirt that I must own.

I'm LOVING the plaid suit here. Rarely does Miss Palermo get out-fashioned, but Zoe pulls it off here.

SAG Awards

Yes, you read the clock right, it is a rare and coveted midday MCLV post! Lots to do this week and no time to take it slow.

The SAG awards were the latest award show on the road towards the Oscars and I thought that most of the ladies whose dresses I’ve loved lately performed well.

Stacy Keibler looked tan and statuesque in this gorgeous black lace Marchesa. I love the off the shoulder silhouette!

Regina King was a vision in a pale lavender, tiered Alberta Ferretti gown.The fit is perfect and I like that she accessorized with darker, metallic jewelry & clutch.

Natalie Portman was a vision in a deep-burgundy colored strapless Giambattista Vallie gown. A simple updo and minimal accessories kept the look from going overboard. That color really suits her!

I think Dianna Agron is absolutely adorable, but she doesn't always wear the most flattering dresses on the red carpet (LOVED her MET gown last year though) so I was excited to see this fuchsia Carolina Herrera number. The cut and color are flattering, the accessorizing is minimal but sweet and her hair is gorgeous.

It takes quite a woman to make red-lace Valentino look sweet and demure! Michelle Williams managed to make this midi-length gown all her own, rather than let it overwhelm her petite frame.

While this would have been even more striking in a bright color, the cutouts and dramatic silhouette of this Zac Posen gown kept it from being anything but boring. I love her silver cuff and great cocktail ring as well.

Marchesa can be busy and over the top but Viola Davis chose wisely with this gorgeous white & gold gown. The soft curls and beautiful cuff were perfect!

Jayma Mays was stunning in Reem Acra - The color, the cut, the train, were all absolutely perfect for her.

It's these type of looks that prove you don't need to be a size-zero Tween to stand out in Hollywood. Mary Steenburgen looked stunning in this fitted, draped David Meister Gown. I LOVE the broach like piece at the waist and the stacked bangles, absolutely perfect on the accessories.

Emma Stone's tea-length Alexander McQueen was one of my favorite looks of the evening. Gorgeous accessories - shoes, gold detailed clutch & earrings - and a beautiful, interesting, stand-out dress.

I almost didn't recognize Kristen Wiig in her draping, white Balenciaga halter gown. She looked chic and well-put together, and I loved her dramatic choker necklace.

And my personal favorite of the Screen Actors Guild Awards?

Zoe Saldana looked phenomenal in shimmery white Givenchy Haute Couture with silver accents. As much as I love this gown on her and as well as it suits her, her unbelievable spiked diamond collar and cocktail ring were without a doubt my favorite pieces of the night. Amazing!

You can check out multiple views of Zoe’s amazing look here.

Awards Awards Awards

No time to chat, lots to see!

12th Annual AFI Awards Luncheon:

Claire Danes looked stunning in chic white Donna Karan. The belt & pumps were a great touch of color and I like how the look is low-key and elegant rather than in your face. You can always count on Donna Karan for that!

Adorable! Such a complimentary combination of colors and fabrics on her. And great shoes!

BAFTA Los Angeles 18th annual Awards Season Tea Party:

Evan Rachel Wood was quite a sight in a fitted red pencil skirt and pointy-shouldered printed blouse from Roland Mouret. I love that she unbuttoned her blouse to reveal a lacy black bra. Feisty!

Charlize Theron looked prim and proper in a gorgeous Stella McCartney dress. The pop of cherry red lipstick keeps all of the yellow from being too sweet.

Octavia Spencer was a vision in white. She accessorized perfectly with a leopard clutch, thick bangle and metallic pumps. Perfect for an afternoon tea.

Felicity Jones stood out in pale Dolce & Gabbana, the ribbon shoes and neutral envelope clutch keep it from being too plain,

The 2012 Independent Spirit Awards:

White seemed to be the color de jour in the days leading up to the Golden Globes and Miss Elizabeth Olsen was another who tried it out. I love the layering of this look, the oversized boyfriend blazer over a shift dress, paired with long necklaces. And I love love love this top handle handbag. Need!

Cinema For Peace event benefitting J/P Haitian Relief Organization:

Felicity Jones was a vision in lacy, layered Valentino. Such a beautiful dress!

The 2012 Art Of Elysium Heaven Gala:

Amber Heard amped up the glamour with this Old Hollywood knockout look from Donna Karan. She wisely let the dress take centerstage and steered away from over accessorizing.

Kirstin Dunst tends to favor looks with a bit of quirk, so while the sheer black overlay on this Valentino gown might have appeared matronly on another actress, it somehow works on her. Another reason I included this look was because her makeup looks flawless, I've never seen her look better.

The white Valentino gown that Ali Larter donned was anything but boring and her earrings and clutch really stole the show. Absolutely gorgeous.

Minka Kelly was hard to miss in bright, bright Oscar de la Renta. The basic silhouette of this gown and the simple gold accessories were important since they let the extraordinary color of the fabric take front and center.

Sorry to tease, I’ll be back later today with the Golden Globes!

Best of 2011

As I was doing my daily blog reading this morning I stumbled upon quite a few 2011 recap & “best of” type of posts. I found that they were really fun to read because it let me get the author’s opinion on things I may have missed over the course of the last year – which was especially fun when it came to the blogs that I only recently discovered.

So in that spirit I thought it would be fun to share some of my favorites from 2011:

Fashion

  • Best Red Carpet StyleZoe Saldana & Diane Kruger. Sorry, can’t narrow it down further, it goes against nature to pick between these two.
  • Favorite NewcomerAmber Heard & Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. They share a certain poise and both favor glamorous, ladylike gowns on the red carpet, which I love. (And I am not at all upset or jealous that Rosie is dating Jason Statham. I swear.)
  • Go-to Fashion Blog – I hate to narrow this down to a single site since I’ve discovered some really great ones this year, but I’d have to say that the most entertaining one I read is Tom & Lorenzo: Fabulous & Opinionated. I’ve had to outlaw it at work because I can’t stop laughing at their commentary.
  • Best Trend – Bright, minimalist Calvin Klein gowns
  • Favorite Collaboration – Karl Lagerfeld for Macy’s Impulse

Fitness

  • Favorite Blog –  The Fitnessista is a great website with motivating posts & booty busting workouts, I’ve cited it a lot in my Gym Goddess series.
  • Favorite ApparatusMedicine balls! There are an endless number of great workouts that you can do to emphasize different muscle groups and you can even do them with limited space which is great if you don’t want an expensive gym membership or if you travel a lot.
  • Best New Workout You Tried – I’m going to have to go with CrossFit. My boyfriend is an instructor so with some not-so-gentle urging I gave CrossFit a try, and  I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised. If you haven’t taken an intro class I highly recommend it. It can be intimidating at first, but it’s challenging, intense and a great atmosphere if you’re competitive and like to push yourself.
  • Best Magazine – I adore Women’s Health. They have creative ideas for workouts, pick great, inspirational women to feature and I love the fun little facts & cute workout gear they include every month.

Food

  • Favorite Recipe – Vegan Mac n’ Cheese made from butternut squash & ANY of Evan’s desserts over at The Wannabe Chef. Seriously, check out his site, he has any type of recipe you could want – vegan, paleo, gluten-free…
  • Best New Ingredient – 2011 was the year of coconut milk! Not only is it high in phosphorus, potassium and iron, its delicious in everything from smoothies to veggies to curries. Yum. (Yes Sean, you were right)
  • New FindLollihop (which I promise you a full post on in the next week or so!)
  • Favorite BlogHungry Hungry Hippie & Oh She Glows
  • Best Books – I can’t pick just one! The Kind Diet, Peas & Thank You, I Am Grateful and Clean were some of the bests though.

What are you favorite new finds of 2011?

I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for more new and exciting in 2012! 🙂

Looks of the Week

What better way to finish off a Monday than to enjoy some great pictures of some great outfits?

Suit up! Nothing screams fall like a 70's inspired suit - check out Justyna from Chameleonic's version w/ a vest & hoop earrings.

For some reason, when I think of animal prints I think of in-your-face prints the likes of which Roberto Cavalli would be lost without. I forget that there are more subtle and low-key ways to wear these prints.

All I have to say is that if you're FIFTY SIX YEARS OLD and you look better in a dress than the rail-thin model wearing it on the runway, you are doing something so so right. And statues should be erected in your honor. I'm just saying.

Zoe Saldana looked adorably retro at the Trevor Project event in Hollywood. I love the ankle strap heels with the bright, geometric mini, much more fun than a LBD.

I love the stripes in this skirt, they're almost Egyptian in their color scheme. Too bad it's so hard to pull off these high-waisted skirts, sigh, if only we could all be supermodels!

Zoe Saldana also stunned at the Children’s Defense Fund Awards in Giambattista Valli. The combination of a ladylike skirt and a fun, floaty white top is picture perfect.

Miss Kailey may be a food blogger, but there's no denying the girl knows how to throw together a cute outfit. I adore the cropped jacket with the gold buttons, tres chic!

Amber Heard stunned in white hot Alessandra Rich at the Trevor Live benefit. I especially love the lace details and the back of this dress!

Hope you had a good Monday!

(Non-FW) Looks of The Week

In case you’re sick of looking at models, editors, buyers and A-Listers at the four major fashion shows, here are some… Oh never mind, it’s all the same people, but at least they’re not at fashion shows in these pictures. 🙂

Kirstin Dunst glowing at the premiere of her new movie. I think she looks really beautiful here and though you can't tell, her hair is really cute and her dress has a keyhole in the back.

Olivia Palermo on Project Runway. I love love love this look and may put together a Style File for it. The skirt in cute & fun with a great 70s vibe and she keeps the rest of her look neutral to let the skirt take center stage.

Selena Gomez looking cute & low-key, this is a great alternative to the ubiquitous LBD.

Taylor Lautner & Lily Collins at their movie premiere looking adorable in black. Rarely can a guy pull off a t-shirt w/ suit look, but this one works. And her Versace dress is just the thing!

Claire Danes at the Emmy's looking sleek and modern. A very unique look that I think paid off.

Evan has really been hitting her stride lately and this is another gorgeous example. Absolutely striking.

Bananas! Nina Doprev devastated in red at the Emmy's, it was one of my favorite dresses by far.

Naya Rivera from Glee looking chic in black & white on the red carpet for American Horror Story. Some of the Glee girls tend to look a little... Matronly. Then there's Lea. I feel like this is a great in between look, age appropriate and fun, but classic.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead (I admit, I had to look her up on IMDB) looked adorable in this Dolce & Gabbana dress. I thought I was sick of stars, but apparently I just wanted to see them in a fresh new way. Et voila!

Jaime King & Selma Blair looking chic in black and white at the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic.

Alexa Chung at the ANDAM Dinner after PFW

Amber Heard isn't exactly a newcomer but with her (recently cancelled) TV series Playboy Club and the upcoming Rum Diary w/ Johnny Depp, she's popping up all over the red carpets. She's a gorgeous, gorgeous girl and likes to keep things classic, which suits her incredibly well.

Michael Michele looking utterly flawless in white on the Ides premiere red carpet. Whoa!

Head over to TLo for a rundown of Miss Lea Michele in Paris in a great 70’s look here. Floppy black hat & kick-ass boots included.

And for the love of all that is holy, this is how to work a red carpet ladies!

Honestly, could this woman look more phenomenal?
