Looks of the Week

Raise your hand if you hate the Monday after a short week… Me! Me! {Picture me jumping up & down} Well, there’s nothing like some fabulous Summer fashion to help you cope with a rough day. So here’s a little something to help you take the edge off.

Yes, this is a sundress, but it’s so much more. The darker, moodier florals and the blue platforms take it from basic to fabulous. Well done.

Such a sweet, retro-inspired Summer look. Love the lacy white top & shorts, but the white sunglasses & bow-topped headband stole the show in my opinion.

Source

Can you picture a cuter travel outfit? Chic and put together, but not overly fussy. Love the black & white, killer bag & accessories, and that hat is adorable!

Killer!

So cute! Chic and perfect for summer. Wouldn’t change a thing!

This dress reminds me of the Kate Moss for Mango tuxedo dress that I bought earlier this year.

Fabulous. Head to toe fabulous. Love the colors and the cut & silhouettes of the separates.

These boots are fabulous but I especially love them paired with this patterned sweated and scarf. Great layering.

While I’m definitely a sucker for a Peter Pan collar, I have to admit that the overall sweet retro feel to this look is what really got my attention. Those shorts are too cute!

Check out some fabulous Do It Yourself projects here for a too cute Leather Peter Pan Collar Necklace DIY that you can easily do if you’re feeling crafty this weekend.

This look has a little edge, and after all of the maxi dresses, sundresses, and pleated skirts I’ve been seeing all Summer, this type of look is really appealing. Killer accessories!

This is just the type of look that I like to throw together during the day on weekends, casual but a chic combination of great pieces – love the coat – and accessories. J’adore those shoes!

Hippie 2012 Breakdown

Coachella 2012 is days away and it has been the topic de jour online the past few weeks. What should you pack, what should you wear, which shows should you see, where should you stay… Well, with all of this hippie-lovin’ going on I thought I’d share some inspiration and suggestions for those of you lucky enough to be heading to Southern California for the festivities.

Jacket Boots Isabel Marant Hat Rag & Bone Bag Alexander Wang Rosie Huntington-Whiteley New York City

Whether you’re shopping for accessories, trying to put together a new and interesting boho inspired look, or trying to style a long weekend’s worth of daily outfits, MCLV’s got you covered for 2012.

Inspiration:

Not sure where to start? Winter Kate’s Spring 2012 lookbook shoot is a great place to get some ideas.

Who’s your favorite hippie to take inspiration from? Do you love old school hippies like musicians Janis Joplin and Aerosmith? Fashion icons like Bianca Jaggar, Ziggy Stardust and Iman? Or modern hippies like Nicole Richie, Kate Moss, Sienna Miller and Johnny Depp?

{This is such a phenomenal photo I had absolutely had to include it. Flowy vintage maxi, faux fur, felt hat, polka dots AND the Alexander Wang Rocco bag I’m obsessed with? Absolute hippie perfection from Gary Pepper Vintage!}

You can also take inspiration from street style and fashion blogs:

Clothes & Brands:

Whether you’re in the market for flowy skirts, maxi dresses, draping cardigans, faux fur vests, beautiful embroidery, tie-dye, harem pants or anything else, the brands and stores below can meet your every need.

Some great brands/stores/websites to check out are: Free People, Akiko at Revolve Clothing, Urban Outfitters, Haute Hippie/Haute Hoodie (personally, I’m MAD for this dress – swoon), Of Two Minds can be found at Revolve Clothing, and of course, ShopBop.

Handbags:

Not only are crossbody bags are all the rage this Spring, they’ll keep your hands free AND you can leave your giant, back aching bag at home! Mama’s a Rolling Stone recommends the tooled leather crossbody bag by Free People that’s pictured below.

Hot Buy: Free People Studded Moroccan Crossbody

Zappos carries the Linea Pelle collection filled with fringe-adorned hobos and clutches, Piperlime has crossbody bags galore,  and Macy’s has a fun selection of patchwork Fossil bags and boho-style Lucky Brand bags. Or you can also check out Etsy for a collection of one-of-a-kind, handmade, and vintage handbags to fulfill all your needs.

Hats:

Are you a fan of the floppy boho-style hats that fashion insiders and celebrities, including Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Lea Michele, have been sporting since the Fall of 2011?

Me too.

Her boyfriend even took the pictures in Haight-Ashbury, the San Francisco hippie epicenter – How authentic! 🙂

Accessories:

Vintage and hippie-inspired accessories have always been my favorite part of this type of style, from headbands and feathered earrings to scarves, layered necklaces, and fringe fringe fringe.

If you needa little bit of jewelry inspiration than look no further than The Sartorialist, who captured a gorgeous pair of wrap around fringed earrings on the streets of Paris. You don’t even need to have your ears pierced to rock these bad boys.

Low Luv Jewelry, created by model Erin Wasson, includes pendants, rings, and bracelets. Or you can shop Nicole Richie’s jewelry line, House of Harlow 1960, which is well-known and adored by those who admire the starlet’s personal style. And if you like a certain celebrity’s hippie-inspired style, for example Nicole Richie or Alessandra Ambrosio, you can shop “closets” inspired by them on the website Boutique To You.

Shoes:

Shoes are incredibly important when you’re pulling together a look. The perfect finishing touch. The cherry on top. Whether you want to go a little Western, keep them casual and comfortable, or go for full on glamour, there’s the perfect shoe or boot for EVERY occasion.

Pre-Fall 2012 Collections: Part III

At long last, as promised, here is the third and final post covering the Pre-Fall 2011 Collections – Part I & Part II are available as well for your viewing pleasure.

The first word that popped into my mind when I surveyed the photographs of the BCBG Max Azaria Pre-Fall 2012 collection was clean. Clean color schemes, clean lines, clean accessorizing. The show was full of beautiful details, patterns, fabrics and accessories, but the pairings still managed to be clean. As only Max and Lubov Azria can do. I especially liked the inclusion of dramatic leather hippie-inspired fringed belts. (You can read what FabSugar has to say about the BCBG show here.)

Wide royal blue and black stripes - Check. Bright colored laced - Check. Pleats - Check. Sheer fabrics - Check. Hippie inspired fringe - Check. Kick @$$ heels - Check. And yet, this looks clean and polished, not busy and overwhelming. Perfection.

Chic black & white evening wear that manages to be simultaneously reminiscent of medieval fashion and utterly modern. Now that's a hard combination to manage!

As much as I adored watching stars like Emma Stone, Diane Kruger and Zoe Saldana on the red carpet in Francisco’s pastel, second-skin creations this past year, I gasped when I saw his Pre-Fall 2011 collection. While the minimalism he’s known for was still present, the thicker fabrics and darker colors paired with more structured looks took Calvin Klein to a whole new level this season. Blacks, greys and taupes with a splash of burnt orange, all done in heavy wools and leathers.

I predict that this dress will be VERY popular this season. It has a cut and a color that are both incredibly flattering and the ribbing and pleat details are perfect for the red carpet. Can't you just picture Eva Mendes looking stunning in this at a movie premiere?

A belted black two piece look in wool and leather with pleats and a braided belt paired with peeptoe platforms, this could almost be mistaken for Michael Kors if the exquisite details and tailoring didn't scream Francisco Costa.

I’ve been a fan of Temperley London since I saw her Fall 2008 Ready-To-Wear show, which I thought was really fun, edgy and well done, sort of biker chick meets supermodel. That show had a much harder edge to it than this latest Temperley London show – hot off her successes of the past year (heard of Pippa Middleton, have you?) she presented a show with a more demure, high society vibe. Pearls, sequins, Swiss-dot tights, headbands, silk blouses, pewter rose belt buckles, A-line skirts, satin evening gowns, leather leggings, opera-length gloves… It was quite a collection (Emma Roberts’s holiday look was inspired by this show).

It's hard to imagine making a cheetah print look proper and ladylike. I guess the key is a shift silhouette, stockings, white driving gloves and a multi-strand pearl necklace.

This dress is beautifully done, with the buttons and subtle panelling of the fabric it is anything but plain. And the styling is perfect with the tights, pumps and belt.

While a lot of the shows that I’ve reviewed thus far have showcased separates, outerwear and dresses that the “average woman” could see herself wearing, there were also a number of houses that focused on a very different, very specific purpose. The red carpet. With the award season almost upon on, Badgle Mischka proved that they’re ready to dress their A-list clients for all their events in the coming months. The collection was on the conservative side, but in a classic, old-school glamour kind of way.

I love, love, love long-sleeved evening gowns. They're the height of elegance in my mind, evoking Hollywood's Golden Age - Greta Garbo, Katharine Hepburn, Claudette Colbert, Bette Davis, Jean Harlow, Rita Hayworth, Marlene Dietrich...

This gown has Julianne Moore's name all over it. It's elegant and understated, but the color and the details at the shoulders & chest keep it interesting. I say hem it a little, add a slit up on side, throw on jeweled sandals and add a serious gold cuff.

Monique Lhuillier is another designer who has recently expanded her repertoire to include more separates and daywear, but who still specializes in red carpet statement gowns. This collection was mostly black, white and grey, with standout splashes of cobalt blue. Florals and lace were the primary patterns and there was very little styling or jewelry, the dresses were left to stand alone.

I don't love the peekaboo hemlines that were all over last season, but somehow the demure length and the gorgeous lace and neckline of this dress make it work.

Interesting necklines are a great way to distinguish yourself in a sea of beautiful women in beautiful dresses. I like the combination of the halter, the belted waist and the slit, it makes the gown formal, but still youthful. This would be a good one for choice for one of the younger stars this season.

How much does this look like one of the gowns that Grace Kelly wore when she was still gracing the red carpets of Hollywood?

Seriously, look!

Brazilian Carlos Miele’s Pre-Fall 2011 collection was entirely made up of red carpet worthy dresses, from movie premieres to the Oscars, he had something for everyone.

This is a beautiful gown that appears very simple but is anything but. I like that its one-shouldered but not a Goddess gown, I think the small skirt-like extra fabric at the waist helps. I also like the ribbon detailing at the hems.

I'm going to go ahead and guess that this print was inspired by Monet's Water Lilies series. What I love about this column gown is the unusual line along the bust, it's neither a traditional sweetheart neckline nor a strictly asymmetrical one.

Another Oscar-season regular is Naeem Khan, whose Pre-Fall 2012 collection included floor length gowns in black & white, florals, sequins and shimmering pastels. I was especially impressed by the printed dresses and the intricate beading. All of these dresses could be styled to be perfect for the red-carpet with some killer heels and tons of costume jewelry.

Paging Studio 54. Paging Studio 54. Everything about this gown, from the cut to the beading to the geometric belt, is calling for a dramatic, statuesque woman to make it hers. I hope Iman finds it!

Gorgeous beading adds a little something extra to this floral gown, which is really well done with its deep v-neck and skinny patent leather belted waist.

The British Are Coming! The British Are Coming!

Happy Friday! To celebrate, I say we look at pretty people getting all dressed up. And luckily for us, there were a couple glamorous, star-studded British events this past week with some very eye-catching looks worth mentioning.

2011 British Fashion Awards

Georgia May Jagger continued the Great Gatsby trend in pale, shimmery Julien Macdonald. I miiight have worn a sandal with a dress this delicate, but there's no denying she looks great here!

How can you not love a girl who can get away with flats at a black tie event? Alexa Chung looked adorably retro and chic in Christopher Kane.

There were two other looks at the 2011 British Fashion Awards that I – GASP – couldn’t make up my mind about… And you want to know what? They were both Matthew Williamson outfits. Go figure.

I should preface this by saying that I’m a little hesitant when it comes to fringe, especially high-octane fringe, but I couldn’t help gasping when I saw this dress. If it was floor length I think the fringe would be too much, but on a cocktail length frock its perfect. But my issue with this look is actually the styling… The hair is a bit severe, I think a gracefully swept back ponytail would have been perfect, and the shoes & clutch are waaay too busy. The key to pulling off this dress is maintaining a level  of simplicity with the rest of the look.

Poppy Delevigne in Matthew Williamson

Since I clicked back to this picture three times I decided that I should say something. It’s a beautiful dress and manages to suit her coloring even though strictly speaking I wouldn’t say those are her colors, and I like her simple accessories and loose braid. My issue? The fringe! I think without the small spots of straw-colored carpet fringe (and a little hemming) this would be a picture perfect look.

Moral of the story? I have zero hard & fast rules when it comes to fringe! 🙂

BAFTA Los Angeles 2011 Britannia Awards

Mr. Yelchin is doing quite well on the red carpet lately. What I really like is that he's not wearing boring suits, they all have subtle patterns, interesting fabrics or an embellishment of some sort that make them stand out. And one word. TAILORING.

This is everything that you want in an evening look, its stunning, head turning and fits Asha to a T. I also love the capsleeves and vintage silver earrings. Simply beautiful.

Felicity Jones looks fresh and young in this fitted Moschino with a ballerina skirt. I think her clutch and hair are the perfect touches, keeping the look minimally chic. (I'll be doing a post on Miss Jones next week so stick around if you'd like to see more of her!)

Have a good weekend!

Hippie Chic

With the Coachella weekends swiftly approaching and people planning their trips out to Southern California, I thought that I’d show a little hippie love with some bohemian-inspired outfits to get you in inspired and in the mood.

Rule #1:

Don’t forget your boots! As the reigning queen of music festival-chic, Her Highness Kate Moss never forgets to bring her boots. They’re key for tramping around between sets, especially given the erratic weather patterns this time of year and the random, unannounced Spring showers.

And in honor of The Queen, here’s outfit suggestion numero un – You’ll need  some flattering, tiny shorts, a loose tunic, low slung belt, Hunters, a cross-body bag and hippie accessories like feathers and chains

Rule #2:

Whether you’re a fan of aviators or Wayfarers, don’t forget to pack a couple of pairs of sunglasses for your trip. Choosing a pair of shades that suits your face can be a challenge, but once you settle on your favorite style you can spice up your look by trying out everything from black & white zebra prints to classic black to tortoiseshell.

The lovely Kate Bosworth is always at the top of the Best Dressed lists after a music festival weekend and here’s yet another example of just how she makes her hippilicious outfits work. This outfit illustrates just how important sunglasses are, both to complete your look and to keep your eyes healthy and safe in the sun!

To put together similar look you should keep it simple and try a summery romper that’s spiced up with lace-up sandals, hoop earrings, a saddle bag and your favorite sunglasses!

Rule #3:

The extras are incredibly important when you’re putting together a fun boho look – You can try adding anything from the handbags and jewelry to headbands and hats.  So when in doubt, pile on the hippie accessories!

Celebrities really know how to do the hippie chic look right by complementing their outfits with colorful headscarves, floral headbands, fringed pieces, hobo bags, braids, draped vests, and oversized vintage sunglasses.

For this kind of outfit you can’t go wrong with faded or distressed skinnies, a basic tank, flat Peter Pan-inspired booties, and then pile on all the hippie accessories that you can get your hands on.

Rule #4:

Why not be an undercover stunner on this trip? Avoid sunburn and disastrous fading and bleaching of your hair by adding an oh-so-chic hat to your ensemble. A floppy, oversized felt hat like below goes really well with a floaty, low-key look like a maxi, while a brimmed fedora will complement a more structured separates look better.

Vanessa Hudgens {anyone seen Sucker Punch?} definitely knows how to stay cool in the summer heat. Believe me when I say that the Southern California sun can be pretty punishing, so please be sure to pack both your hat and sunglasses!

Try mixing up your hippie chic look by pairing a flowy, ethereal maxi dress or maxi skirt with strappy flat sandals, vintage gold chains, and a fedora or wide-brimmed hat.

Now run off and enjoy the music loves, and don’t forget your sunscreen!
