Festival Fashion 2013: California Hippie Chic
Spring in California means one thing for concert lovers – Music festival season! From Burning Man to Coachelle there are plenty of events, concerts, and fun, festive gatherings to get you outside and enjoying the Spring weather.
{Coral Cut-Offs from The Chriselle Factor, Fringed perfection from Peace Love Shea, Breezy Coral from Fashion Toast & H&M Bustier from Song of Style}
While my day job keeps me in San Francisco and away from the festivities I always look forward to the music festival posts from my favorite bloggers who make the trip – I especially love the candid & group shots since they make you feel like you’re there! 🙂
So let’s get in the mood for this season’s festivals by checking out some of the fashion from years past and seeing how it can be applied to our current wardrobes. One of the best parts about vintage & retro inspired styles is that they’re so long-standing you can wear the same pieces season after season by mixing up accessories & injecting some on-trend styling.
{This maxi skirt look is one of my favorites from Liz over at Late Afternoon – She looks great with a crown of braids, midriff baring music tee, and a printed, flowy maxi skirt.}
Make maxi magic with a maxi length skirt or dress – From bold colors to breezy sheer fabrics to fun, eye-catching prints, there’s the perfect maxi out there for everyone.
{Left: Striped Tank Maxi Dress – $70-$80 @ Victoria’s Secret & Right: Club L Bandeau Maxi Dress – $25 on sale @ Asos}
Shopping Tip – If you’re on the petite side be sure to get your dress hemmed or shop a brand that carries petite sizes to avoid destroying the hem when it drags on the ground.
{Want to try out the midriff baring trend? Get inspired by Peace Love Shea’s simple cutoff tee here.}
There are midriff baring tops everywhere for Spring with styles running the gamut from retro bathing suit inspired silhouettes to simple DIY cut-offs that you could make from your favorite comfy old shirt in a few minutes.
{Left: Eagle Graphic Crop Tee – $20 @ Nordstrom & Right: Cropped Tee – $18 @ TopShop}
Shopping Tip – If you’re curvy try a retro halter style, while ladies with more boyish figures could give the style worn by Peace Love Shea above a try. The key is to show off what you’ve got! 🙂
{If you’re a fan of vintage rock tees now’s the time to break them out!}
Is there anything more perfectly hippie-inspired than fringe? From over-the-shoulder bags draped with thick fringe that evoke images of the Old West to cut-off shirts and denim shorts that are beach or music festival ready.
{Left: BP Faux Leather Fringe Hobo Bag – $38 @ Nordstrom & Right: Boutique 9 Fringed Flat Sandal – $58 @ Neiman Marcus Last Call}
Shopping Tip: If your personal style is more conservative or classic but you want to try out this trend then aim for a fun accessories. From bags, to necklaces, to moccasins, there’s something that will suit everyone’s style!

Styling 101: Easy Tips For Mixing Prints
Animal prints for daytime can be a challenge to pull off – You want the look to be fun and eye-catching, but not tip the scales into tacky-ville. We’ve all seen one of those. And cringed. My number one tip for making an animal print – Or two – Daytime appropriate is to pair the printed piece and/or accessory with a solid colored piece. Black or white both make great contrasts, as would a more neutral hue like tan or nude.

These Prabal Gurung for Target heels are going to be a staple for me this Spring. There’s very little I love more than an extremely versatile piece like these shoes – They’ll work great for daytime looks with florals or prints, and be the perfect finishing touch & pop of color for monochrome and nighttime looks like cocktail dresses. And yes, I know I need a 12 step program for Zara skater skirts… 🙂

The time for Spring Break and Summer vacations is swiftly approaching which means that it’s almost time to start thinking about your travel style. One of the things that I love about vacations is playing the part of a vacationing fashionista – Breaking out my resort gear, simplifying my beauty routine, and spending all my time in sandals & bathing suits. Spring 2013 Menswear Fashion
While mens styles tend to be more long-standing there are still some fun trends and pieces to keep in mind when you’re updating your wardrobe each season. And with the weather starting to edge towards Spring it’s time to consider how to dress for warm days and vacations!
Keep Things Interesting:
A colorful or printed jacket or blazer is a great way inject some personality into your Spring looks this year – A plaid version like the one above is classic but still fun, which is a great combination since you’ll be able to wear it again another season.
If trying out a new color combination is on your To Do List be sure to check out The Sartorialist’s On The Runway: Maroon & Blue for some beautiful pictures from the Fall 2013 Collections.
The Spring 2013 runway shows features some great styles, bold colors, and interesting, eye-catching prints. Translating those styles to the street can be a challenge though so check out Well Groomed’s Spring 2013 Menswear Collections & Squidoo’s Men’s 2013 Spring Fashion Trends.
Accessories:
Up for a project? This colorblock tie from I SPY DIY is a great, quick option that’ll result in a wholly unique, one-of-a-kind accessory that you can really express yourself with – Colorblock Tie DIY.
There are a few quality pieces that every man should own – Nice shoes, classic wallet, a good belt… If you’re missing that last one be sure to educate yourself before you head out shopping by reading The Attire Club’s How To Choose A Good Belt.
Get creative and expand your options by learning some interesting new ways to knot your tie – Different Types of Ties from 9GAG: Life is a gag, make it fun.

Tips & Suggestions:
Tailoring is one of the best ways that you can ensure that you look sharp. Even less expensive pieces will look like they cost more and are made of better materials if they fit like they were made for you. So shop around and find the right tailor for you. Read through this great series from Kolonel Mustard all about tailoring – The Tailor Project: Introduction & The Tailor Project: Parts 1 – 5.
Creating a clutter-free, organized space is the key to making dressing each day go smoother, faster, and more stylishly. If you can’t find what you’re looking for because nothing is hung up or if you forget that you own pieces because there’s so many outdated pieces crammed into your wardrobe your daily dressing will suffer. So take some advice from New York City based fashion blogger Scout Sixteen – On Organization.

MCLV Style: Rolled Jeans
One of my favorite looks right now is jeans with the hem rolled up paired with heels, flats, or even ankle boots. I just can’t get enough of this silhouette so I decided to give this style a try with a pair of pumps in a cute polka dot print. And with plenty of layers so I would survive the Northern California March weather!

Spring 2013 Trend: Track Pants
My relationship with the current track pant trend is sort of like a high school relationship – It’s complicated.
On paper – I hate the idea. I like formality and classic styles so a trend that makes pants that could feasibly be worn to the gym appropriate street-wear isn’t necessarily ideal in my mind. That being said, I’ve found myself thoroughly enjoying some of the styles that I’ve seen put together lately.
My conclusion? I like them on other people, when worn right, but I will probably never head to the store expressly to buy myself a pair. It’s just not my style. But if this is your style than you’re in luck, I rounded up some great examples of just how to pull off this trend!
Enjoy the pictures my loves!
{Jada Pinkett Smith is white-hot in an all white look and track pants with a neon tuxedo stripe.}
{You don’t have to feel obligated to try this trend out in basic colors or fabrics – Get creative like Camille Over The Rainbow and try out a leather pair!}
{Want to make your look Spring-ready? Try layering florals like The Fashion Guitar for a fun, eclectic look.}
{Black & white plus a pop of color is a color scheme that can easily be applied to this track pant trend – On The Racks does it write in a Letterman sweater and aqua pumps.}
{If you’re not a heel girl but want to add a feminine touch to your track pants than wedges are a great option. A graphic tee is another great way to add your own personal spin to a look.}
Where do you stand on track pants? Will you be giving this trend a try?

MCLV Style: Spring Stripes
This past weekend I had my very first Sacramento style shoot. I had some trepidation about arranging it – Would I forget things that I needed in San Francisco? Would we be able to find time? Would there be a good location to shoot? – It ended up not only going off without a hitch, but also being easy and fun.

We ended up at the entrance way to Sacramento’s fair grounds and played around with different backgrounds. The highlight of the shoot? My photographer laying in the street to get the shot that she wanted. If my smile looks strained it’s because I was terrified she was going to get hit by a car!

Looks of the Week
Happy Monday!
What better way to start a week off than some great sartorial inspiration? It always gives me a little lift when I see well-put together outfits, it also motivates me to put in some added effort when it comes to my personal style choices.
What about you? If you see some great looks does it motivate you to be more creative when you’re putting together and styling your daily outfits?

This is a great example of on of my favorite ways of putting together an outfit – Camille Over The Rainbow is a master of high-low dressing. Zara, Asos, and H&M pieces paired seamlessly with a gorgeous Celine handbag.

This is just stunning. I love the unique combination of dramatic animal prints, reptilian leggings, and the sheer fabric of the blouse. It is certainly eye-catching!
She’s also carrying the Celine bag that seems to be the It Bag for Spring/Summer 2012 and which I’ve been drooling over for months. It’s a great choice because it’s large enough to tote around your must have’s but not so big that you’re carrying around all of your belongings. I’ve also been seeing it mostly in versatile neutral colors – white, tan, brown, and deep wine red – and this is such a classic style and shape that you know a neutral in this bag will be useable every season until the end of time!

I love everything about this look – From the cute black & white patterned day dress to the fringed cross-body bag to the adorable black framed glasses. The perfect outfit for a low-key day when you still want to look cute.

I’ve always admired Eva’s street style, she’s got a look that’s very much her own – ladylike with a unique twist, like her blue sunglasses here. This is a really cute sundress in a flattering pattern and length, a great look for warm Summer days.

If you’re going to go for an all-black outfit take a cue from model Daiane and keep your look interesting with a statement necklace and a great bag. Accessories can do wonders!

A standout jacket is a great way to finish off a look. Even in summer you can throw on a lightweight coat, like this gorgeous Kenzo version, and you’re ready for anything!

Could this look scream Summer more? It’s bright, fun, and a little bit sassy. I’m a sucker for shirtdresses and I really love her choice of accessories, that large envelope clutch is divine.

If hippie’s not your style but you’re planning to head to music festivals this is a great look to aspire to – ladylike chic. A trench will still be classic whether you choose pale pink or powder blue, so you can choose whatever color suits you best. P.S. LOVE those cat flats.

Sexy Summer whites! Whites are a great way to stay cool in the Summer, night or day. Throw on some great separates and grab a sleek clutch like this gorgeous patent leather version and you’re good to go.

I really like both of these dresses. Some actresses promoting a movie with a younger co-star would feel pressure to wear clothing that’s too “young” for them, but like Elizabeth Banks did at all of the Hunger Games premieres, Charlize Theron kept it classy and age-appropriate. And I love Kristen’s belted BCBG dress!
So tell me, what has been your favorite trend this Spring? What have you not been able to stop wearing or daydreaming about lately?
MCLV Style File: Olivia Palermo
Welcome back to MCLV’s Style File, today I’ll be breaking the great Spring look from Olivia Palermo below and give you some ideas on where to find the pieces like these ones.
She wore this look at the Men’s Fashion Week shows in Milan in the Fall of 2011. Can you picture a more chic, menswear- inspired look for those shows?
The building blocks of this outfit can be broken down to three basic parts – The chic cropped trousers, the absolutely gorgeous double-breasted sweater coat, and the fierce leopard print heels. Each of these pieces can be adapted as you see fit and paired with a basic white T to finish it off.
{Top: (Left) Vince Camuto ‘Abstract Leaf’ Crop Pants = $100 @ Nordstrom & (Right) Café Capri in harvest tweed – $150 @ J.Crew and Bottom: (Left) Café Capri in wool check – $70 (sale price) @ J.Crew & (Right) Exact Stretch Capri Pant – $55 @ The Limited}
Depending on your personal style you can really change-up the basics of this look, or you can stay true to Miss Olivia’s style choices. With all the floral pants being shown for this Spring you could really spice a pair of cropped pants up if you’re in a daring, fashion-forward mood. As for the fit, you could go for s slim cut, something looser, or a more structured, menswear-inspired style.
{Left: CLOSED Anthracite Double Breasted Knitted Cardigan – $135 @ Stylebop, Center: Loose-fit double-breasted cardigan – $40 (sale price) @ Mango, and Right: FUNKTIONAL Comfort Cardi – $90 (sale price) @ Revolve Clothing}
Depending on the color-scheme that you settled on for your look, the sweater color and style can vary quite a bit. If you go for a bright pant, I would recommend balancing them out with a neutral toned sweater. On the other side hand, if you went with a simple black, white, or neutral colored pant, you could either stick with a monochrome look or go for a contrasting color or patterned sweater.
{Top: (Left) Stella McCartney leopard-print satin wedge pumps – $190 (sale price) @ The Outnet & Sam Edelman Sophie Two-Tone Wedge Sandal – $120 @ Neiman Marcus, Bottom: (Left) Diane Von Furstenberg April pumps – $180 @ Bluefly & (Right) Nine West Flax pump – $75 @ Piperlime}
Obviously floral pants and leopard print heels are a challenge to pull off in combination, so depending on your pant and sweater choices you’ll want to adjust the vibrancy of the pattern in the shoes you wear. Traditionally you’ll want to have a single piece be the stand-out part of a look, rather than having attention bounce from one thing to another and back. So if your pants are going to be bright or eye-catching, try for a more neutral-toned heel.
I promise I wont leave such a long gap between Style File posts going forward, I already have a couple in mind that I know you’ll love. In the meantime, you can look through some of the previous MCLV Style File looks below:
MCLV Fashion & Lessons In Self Portraits
While I originally strove for the impossible here – i.e. decent looking self portraits – I decided to give this another attempt this past week. I’ve been having a lot of fun with my fashion choices lately and wanted to share it with you guys as best I can.

Pocket tunic - Express, Pants - DKNY, Sweater - Banana Republic, Boots - Can't remember & Jewelry - Vintage (Belle Cose)
A tunic over slim pants is one of my favorite silhouettes and I adore layering vintage gold jewelry so I really love this type of look. These boots, that I got years and years ago, are my current favorites – I like the thick heel because they’re incredibly comfortable, while the buckles give them a bit of a rock n’ roll feel.
This colors in this dress are perfect for Spring while the subtle pattern is fresh and eye-catching. Styling it is fun because of the different ways that you can go – In January I went with a bright red coat, tights, and black pumps during the 10 Day Style Challenge. These new MaddenGirl shoes are really comfortable and I’m absolutely mad about them right now.
I always feel like Inspector Gadget when I wear bucket hats! 🙂
A belted jacket is such a great, classic look when its chilly out. No matter the occasion, day or night, a great coat can finish your look. It gives your outfit an overall air of polish.
I love pleated skirts and excitedly picked up three for this Spring season. This black one is incredibly versatile, it can be worn with tights and boots when its colder out or with sandals and a tank during warmer weather.
Unfortunately we’re still suffering through day after day of rain here in San Francisco, so despite my desire to pull out all of my Spring clothes I’m still very much in winter mode from a wardrobe standpoint.
Have you switched to your Spring clothes & accessories yet?
