MCLV Style: New York City

New York City BABY!

As I’m sure you picked up, I was beyond excited for this trip – Seeing my best friend, attending IFBCON, and getting the chance to spend some quality time in NYC, a city that I’ve been having a love affaire with for years now.

When I was packing for my trip to New York I found myself in a quandary – it was going to be extremely hot and humid but I’m a fairly formal dresser. Luckily for my internal body temperature this was the first Summer that I’ve worn shorts since Junior High, so I packed a few pairs for the trip. But how to style them? Shorts & a tank might be an appropriate bathing suit coverup, but for walking down the streets of New York City? Definitely not!

So with that in mind I paired my exposed zipper shorts from Zara with a striped tee with a rhinestone embellished collar, tons of chunky silver jewelry, ankle strap heels, and an oversized envelope clutch. I was comfortable temperature-wise, but still felt stylish enough to strut my stuff all over Manhattan! 🙂

New York Fashion Diary

While I didn’t have the honor of attending any of the New York Fashion Week Spring 2013 shows – SOB – I was lucky enough to spend four days in the city that never sleeps right before the shows, parties, and FNO kicked off, and it gave me a unique chance to witness the city amping up to the fashionable frenzy that is Fashion Month.

And please believe me when I say that four days of glorious walking , exploring, shopping, eating, drinking, and aimless wandering are this city were four days very well spent!

{A little jewelry shopping at the MET – We definitely got some funny looks!}

{Yes, we are complete and utter nerds. Since 7th grade.}

{Lincoln Center, Far West Chelsea, Meatpacking District}

We also ate at three vegan restaurants, walked through Central Park twice, sprinted through Central Park once, and had a little quality retail therapy in Soho.

When you travel to a city during a trip do you like to do “touristy” things like go to museums? Do you like to walk around a new city to get to know it and familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods?

Weekend Adventures

Over the weekend this little city girl escaped San Francisco for a weekend of wind, water, and family at dreamy Fallen Leaf Lake near South Lake Tahoe – Virtually the same weekend as last year actually.

After a short stop in sweltering Sacramento we headed up to the breezy, welcoming mountain air of Tahoe. I’ve been visiting my family’s cabin on Fallen Leaf Lake since I was a baby and it holds so many memories.

Day-long hikes gone awry with their destinations never discovered, swimming in the freezing snow-melt lake, climbing up waterfalls, boating on the lake in everything from a canoe to a kayak to a Sun Fish sailboat, and even flipping one of the boats & getting stranded at the opposite end of the lake with a friend.

Needless to say a jolt of excitement and anticipation always thrills through me as soon as I can see the distinctive roof top and the vacation actually begins.

And this was an especially fun weekend as the boy and I joined my parents, aunt, uncle, and grandparents at the cabin for a relaxed weekend of hikes, boat rides, reading on the deck, vino, and huge family meals. I mean the amount of food, not the number of people by the way. 🙂

How was everyone’s weekend? Do you like to get out of your hometown on occasion and relax in the country or are you a city mouse through-and-through?

Chateau La Durantie

The next leg of my vacation consisted of four spectacular days with my extended family at the Chateau La Durantie, less than ten minutes from the village of Lanouaille.

Not bad, huh?

Fashion: The fashion at La Durantie was allllll about the wedding. My aunt and her boyfriend of 8 years tied the knot in the sitting room of the house while 20 of us watched with barely concealed glee. Shortly after their “I do’s” we popped the bubbly and got down to the business of eating, drinking, toasting and dancing our booties off!

Food: We had some catered meals while we were here, including the wedding dinner and brunch the next morning, as well as two borderline gourmet dinners prepared by my new cousin and cousin-in-law, Taylor and Melissa. Sour dough baguette pizzas, gluten-free pasta, homemade pasta sauce, tomatoes & pumpkins from the garden and tons of salads. Yummy! And when we went to a small town nearby to get flowers for the wedding, I found a health food store with tofu! Tofu in France! 🙂 Needless to say I was a happy, happy girl while I had access to the kitchen at La Durantie.

Fitness: Walking, sightseeing in the nearby towns, bike riding, a short run, the Chateau even had tennis courts and a pool! It was nice to have more than a day or two in a single place and once we settled in we were able to explore the beautiful countryside between summer showers. I also spent a healthy chunk of my time sprawled across the bed in our sun-drenched bedroom finishing my book.

Lodgings: The pictures above hardly do La Durantie justice. It was an older building still undergoing renovations, but given that it didn’t have plumbing or running water a few years ago, we were all pleasantly surprised by how modern the facilities were. There were ten bedrooms on three different floors, and the top floor was for us “kids” (the youngest of whom was my 22-year-old cousin). Running up and down those stairs dozens of times each day did wonders for my legs!

Travel: Since we still had our rented vans we did a couple day trips and when we left the Chateau on Monday eight of us piled in and began a NINE HOUR drive to Saint-Émilion, which for the record, should have taken two.

Highlights: My boyfriend’s favorite part of the entire trip was the wedding dinner, which was a pepper-encrusted steak (I had ratatouille which was great as well), and he honestly hasn’t stopped talking about this meal since we got home. He ate his, as well as most of my mother’s, the 13 year old sitting next to me’s entire steak and half of her mother’s. He was stuffed by happy.

Stay tuned for Bordeaux, Spain and the adventures from the longest car ride ever!

(If you’d like to catch up, you can check out London here and Paris here)

Paris – Oo la la

When I last left off on my vacation overview I was leaving London for the city of lights. We arrived in Paris Tuesday night and left Thursday afternoon so it was, as with London, a very brief visit. Finally over our jet lag we focused our energy on sightseeing and sampling the local cuisine.

And by cuisine I mean wine & beer. 🙂

Cheers! My family at lunch. Seriously, lunch.

Fashion: I am still shocked that I didn’t have any major accidents while walking down the streets of Paris considering I don’t think I was looking where I was going for more than 30 seconds the entire time we were there. Some stereotypes are stereotypes for a reason and the women of Paris did not disappoint (I’ve been to Paris before, but I wasn’t as fashion oriented at the time). They were chic and thin, there wasn’t a tennis shoe or a pair of sweats as far as the eye could see. Lots of flats and low heels, probably due to it being a walking-intensive city. Lots of layering and fun silhouettes, lots of high-low mixing & matching and lots of not-so-basic black. The accessory de jour? Le pliage bags from Longchamp, they were everywhere! The other, not so chic accessory in every woman’s hand? A cigarette. I spent most of the time in Paris sneezing!

Food: Honestly, I wasn’t blown away by the food while we were in Paris. Neither my boyfriend or I eat bread so most restaurants were something of a challenge during our short stay, though he usually ended up with poulet of some sort. We supplemented our smaller meals out with petit casino finds like nuts, goat cheese, apples & little Tupperware containers of tabouli. And yes, I made up the phrase petit casino to mean corner store. And I think it makes perfect sense! 🙂

Fitness: So much walking! Lost wandering, church steps, hills, exploring and walking between our hotel and the areas where the rest of my family was staying. Exhausting! We had a nap the second day and still barely made it to our pillows that night before crashing.

Lodgings: Our hotel wasn’t really anything special, but the location was great, we were across the street from the scenic Jardin du Luxembourg and we had a cute little cafe on the corner.

Sights: My family was spread out all over Paris which gave us a unique chance to check out all of the different hotels and fun neighborhoods. My aunt and her fiance stayed at the sumptuous Park Hyatt in central Paris, while my cousin & brother stayed in the Latin Quarter and my parents rented an apartment in Les Gobelins.

Travel: My family rented cars for our from exit Paris and seven of us piled into a van Thursday morning for a five-hour drive south to Lanouaille lead by Mademoiselle Garmin. You’d think they’d get someone who can pronounce the French words to be the voice of the GPS…

I still have nightmares. At the next round-about, take the second exit.

Highlights: Most of our rowdy group really enjoyed the food in Paris, from thin crust pizzas & giant beers to roasted chicken & steaks w/ pomme frites. I ate the frites. 🙂 My favorite part? The fashion of course. With big cities like this you get to see a lot of street traffic even during a short stay, and I really enjoyed the people watching. Oh, and I loved seeing everyone carrying their groceries home each night with the inevitable baguette sticking out the top. Too French!
