By adding a statement necklace, a pair of eye-catching earrings, or stacking some fun bracelets you can add a touch of personalization to your daytime look. I for one don’t step outside without a cuff or a necklace, no matter how casual my look – It’s the perfect finishing touch.

Here are my go-to tips for weekend dressing that keep me out of a fashion rut:

  1. Mixing & Matching – By pairing separates in new & fun ways you’re bound to put together a new-to-you look you’ll love!
  2. Get Girlie – Whenever I’m starting to feel like I’m in a rut I get back to basics and throw on a flirty dress that makes me feel feminine. It’s a great way to break out of a jeans and t-shirt habit.
  3. Make A Statement – As I said above, adding a statement piece is my favorite way to take a look to the next level. So next time you look in the mirror and think “bleh” I challenge you to add a fun statement piece like a dramatic necklace, a pair of great shoes, or an eye-catching bag, belt, or pair of sunglasses.

As much as I adore separates sometimes a girl just wants to throw on a dress to enjoy a beautiful sunny day. And what could be a better choice than this beautiful Prabal Gurung for Target floral & black paneled dress?

This has been my favorite designer collaboration so far and I woke up early to make sure there wasn’t a repeat of the Jason Wu for Target debacle {Seriously? All my sizes gone by 9am?}. This dress is my favorite piece that I ordered and I love how it’s a grown-up, modern take on sweet Spring florals. Stay tuned for a peek at the gorgeous heels I also ordered!

Styling 101: Winter Florals

I don’t know about you but I’m ready for Spring. I love Winter – Don’t get me wrong. From the cozy layers to the chic outerwear to the never-ending choices for eye-catching accessories, Winter is just such a fun season from a sartorial standpoint. That being said, for some reason this year I cannot WAIT for Spring. I’m not sure if it’s the extra cold Winter weather in San Francisco or the fact that my closet is stuffed to the brim with fun new Spring duds that are just waiting to be taken out for a spin…

Ok, it’s probably the latter! 🙂

I finally decided that the next best thing to Spring actually starting would be getting all decked out in Winter florals! You can easily take a fun warm weather frock and make it Winter-appropriate by adding some cute layers or warm outerwear. This faux leather-sleeved coat was a great addition – It kept me perfectly toasty and looked like it was made to be worn with my new cut-out BCBG booties.

Are you ready for Valentine’s Day?

Well I have a little treat for you – Come visit Moi Contre La Vie & Sasha Maks next week at the Valentine’s Day trunk show featuring all of the amazing, one-of-a-kind vintage jewelry from Sasha Maks Vintage {more details here & you can RSVP on Eventbrite}. MCLV Style: Animal Prints

Nothing in the world is easier and more comfortable for a Saturday full of errands than leggings and a tunic. The main pieces in this look are the definition of basic black.

In order to keep the look from being boring I spiced it up with my new oversized orange+cheetah BCBG clutch, zebra print smoking flats, and a vintage elephant pendant. Cheetah, zebra, and elephant, you say? Now that’s not so basic!

Are you a fan of mixing prints? What about mixing animal prints like I did here? How many different prints is too many in your opinion?

Styling 101: Texture Queen

Today’s Styling 101 post is about mixing things up – From textures & fabrics to mixing metals. I love how this look pairs vintage gold and silver brooches & cocktail rings – The different styles & metals make the look more striking and visually interesting.

The other thing that’s so fun about this look is the variety of textures & fabrics in the clothing – The coat alone has faux fur sleeves, a tweed torso, and cashmere trim. And pairing it with a pleated mini skirt, jersey & leather top, and striped tights created a cozy Winter look that, despite being mostly black, was still very fun & one-of-a-kind.

Do you like to mix gold & silver jewelry?

Styling 101: Cold Blooded

Learning how to style a classic trench coat and put together a chic, wholly original look with basic pieces is what today’s Styling 101 post is about. Here we took a traditional khaki trench from H&M and made it more interesting by adding a faux fur snood and fun, eye-catching vintage bracelets. Not to mention a cute Eiffel Tower button-up sweater and patent Oxford booties. 🙂

I fell head-over-heels with this look over on The Chriselle Factor and just knew that I had to buy a similar faux fur snood from Asos. As soon as it arrived in the mail I tried layering it over a few looks but really liked the way it looked with a classic trench. Et voila!

MCLV Style: Leopard Print

I’ve been hunting for the perfect faux fur coat for what seems like forever – Finding the right silhouette, the right fabric, and the right style had begun to seem like an impossible task. Until I discovered this vintage faux fur baby!

I found this at a little vintage shop that I can’t even remember the name of, but which I will clearly need to return to. If I can find it. It’s incredibly soft and I like the oversized, retro feel, and the wide collar. I definitely wouldn’t have had the confidence to wear such a loud coat a few years ago so I was extremely pleased by how excited I was to put together a look with it. It’s not unheard of for a new purchase to hang sadly in my closet, tags in place, until a friend adopts it.

Do you ever get excited about a new purchase and then completely forget about it or decide after the fact that you’re not sure you can pull it off?

Styling 101: Retro Accessories

This week’s Styling 101 post is all about accessories – Fall & Winter are all about layering and finding chic ways to stay warm that are stylish rather than frumpy.

When it comes to cold weather my favorite part about getting dressed in the morning is piling on the accessories – From scarves and caps to gloves and boots. This faux fur scarf caught my attention when I saw it not only for the bold color but the fun, retro feel that the style has. Pairing a piece like this with vintage jewelry like this broach & bracelet is perfect because it adds a classic feel and elegance to an otherwise modern look.

This Styling 101 post is about how to dress up basic – and not so basic – black this season. The shops are filled with fabulous frocks right now but if you don’t have the time, the interest, or the disposable income to buy a new dress – Why not spice up your favorite little black dress?

Layering beautiful necklaces, piling on eye-catching cocktail rings, adding a cuff or bangles, and finding oversized earrings that suit you are great ways to add a memorable and personal twist to an LBD.

Styling 101: Gatsby Girl

This week’s Styling 101 post is all about Fall accessories! I don’t know about you, but the moment there’s a chill in the air I excitedly break out my gloves, scarves, ear muffs, snoods, outerwear, and any and all faux fur in my closets. I adore bundling up and must confess that adding pieces like fur-trimmed capes, elbow-length gloves, and even fun printed umbrellas to my daily looks is a huge mood booster.

However, as much as I love Fall & Winter accessories, I must confess I’m not usually one for hats . But even I couldn’t help but fall in love with this one as soon as I saw it! To celebrate the upcoming Great Gatsby film – and to give me an excuse to wear my new hat – I wanted to put together a fun, 20’s inspired look and this Burberry Brit drop-waist shift dress was the perfect frock!

Looks of the Week

Welcome back to the latest Looks of the Week post – This week I’m featuring some great outfit shots that I found of stylish fashion bloggers, models, and celebrities from all around the world.

I can’t decide what I love most about this shot of Liz from Late Afternoon – The mixing of polka dots & stripes, the killer red booties, or the adorable set up of the photograph itself. Too cute.

A striking metallic belt in a unique corset-like shape like this one is a GREAT way to spice up a classic trench coat. While a trench is always a great choice and immediately gives your look a “put together” air, sometimes taking one to a new level can be fun.

I love maxi dresses and skirts for Fall – So long as it’s not raining you can create a really cute look like this. One part flower child – One part rock n’ roll chick!

Period dressing and really sticking to an era is such a fun way to approach and look. I always truly appreciate the effect when a stylish lady goes to all of that effort and produces a wholly original look like this one – So well done!

I’m totally cape obsessed right now and this look made me gasp! I love the brightly hued dress, the trench-inspired khaki cape, the knee socks, and I especially love the cute vintage style hat. Totally classic and totally fabulous.

Creating a cozy look with layering and knit pieces doesn’t have to leave you looking frumpy – This is a fabulous example of how a chunky sweater or knit cap can look tres chic! I especially love how she paired those killer buckled boots with warm socks.

I love the vintage-meets-modern feel of this look. It’s sweet and romantic but at the same time the boots & button-adorned blazer give it a structured, tailored vibe that’s very in for Fall.

Miss Miranda has been KILLING it lately on the street style front – Every photograph that I’ve seen of her is absolutely stunning, it’s like she has a movie costume designer choosing her outfits every time she steps out of her house. What I especially liked about this look is its simplicity – which makes it easy to emulate – it’s just a sweater dress, a black coat, and a pair of knee-high black boots.

Be sure to stay tuned for a new MCLV Style File post featuring Miranda’s fabulous street style!

Which of these cold weather looks is your favorite? Are you favoring vintage-inspired pieces, classic styles, or one-of-a-kind modern looks right now?

Styling 101: Bohemian Chic

This week’s Styling 101 post is about era dressing – I always get excited when the 70’s are “in” for Fall – There are so many amazing fashion choices that you can make to celebrate that era. From wide leg pants to cropped cigarette pants, simple Mod-style dresses, and jumpsuits to fabulous accessories like felt hats, skinny belts, and boots of every shape & style. I especially like adding a bit of a bohemian flare and this long-sleeved shift dress in dark, moody florals is the perfect way to bring that style to life.

These lace up booties were a no brainer with this floral shift, they compliment it perfectly and keep the look more relaxed than a pair of pumps would have. Layering silver pieces and beads was a great way to play up the 70’s flower child vibe that we were going for here – They’re fun but still eye-catching and chic. A great way to make a basic dress like this one pop is by adding statement pieces like these layered vintage necklaces and the brightly color Givenchy handbag.

Don’t forget that you can shop these fabulous one-of-a-kind pieces over at the Sasha Maks Vintage website while they’re available!

Voyage To Marrakech

A big Thank You to The Factory and The Evans Group for the unbelievable trip to Marrakech last week – Who knew that in the streets of SOMA you could escape to the market stalls of exotic Morocco?

Voyage To Marrakech is an evening inspired by Yves Saint Laurent’s glamorous 1970’s lifestyle in Moroco to showcase their Spring 2013 Collection. An illuminated nighttime Marrakech marketplace, with cocktails, food, and music, and live photoshoot presentation, featuring live vignettes inspired by iconic YSL iconic photographs.

Stylish San Franciscans flocked to our own personal Marrakech last week to celebrate The Factory’s new collection inspired by the love affaire that YSL had with Marrakech.

{The looks that evening ran the gamut from ultra modern to vintage inspired to came-straight-from-the-office}

{Cocktails, mannequins sporting Yves Saint Laurent-inspired frocks, friends reuniting, fortune tellers…}

{And the models showed off a phenomenal Spring 2013 collection filled with sleek, shimmering fabrics, vintage patterns & prints, luxurious metallics, faux fur, relaxed silhouettes, and fun accessories}

{I wore a long-sleeved, high-neck vintage shift dress, Zara ankle strap heels, and a fabulous gold necklace from Sasha Maks Vintage}

{Check out more photographs from this event here – Just log into Facebook to view}

This was the fifth event that I’ve had the honor of attending at The Factory, check out my posts on the previous events below:

Looks of the Week – Menswear Edition

Most of the fashion that I feature on this site is geared towards women, but I have to confess that I do in fact love mens fashion and follow a number of male fashion bloggers. So today I thought we could celebrate some of the oh-so-stylish gentlemen out there. We all have men in our lives – whether it’s a significant other, brother, father, son – who we can use this as inspiration to shop for!

I’m not going to lie, I have a bit of a fashion crush on this blogger {he was featured in this Looks of the Week post & Let’s Hear It For The Boys}. Not only does he have a great sense of style, he’s pretty darn funny in the comments section of his Tumblr account – which is, by the way, named after his hair – Edward’s Hair.

What caught my eye here were all of the great neutral colored layers – Not only is that a killer shearling coat, he’s also wearing a button-down shirt and a sweater vest paired with a great printed scarf. If you’re interested in learning how to stylishly apply layers, My Mirror is a site that you should definitely check out.

This Italian blogger is a PhD-level accessorizer – This is such a fabulous combination of pieces, it almost looks like an advertisement for a luxury brand! Retro sunglasses, an orange cashmere tie, Belfiore shoes, Louis Vuitton briefcase, and a killer vintage coat – Utter perfection.

What I love about this is the combination of colors, textures, and prints. The blue & white Gingham button-down shirt paired with the army green suit jacket is great, but I love how he took it a step further and paired those pieces with the brown slacks.

Just because it’s cold out doesn’t mean that your personal style needs to go out the window while you pile on layer after layer. Here’s a chic example of how to casually layer and add cold weather pieces to a look without sacrificing fashion.

Suits don’t have to be boring or traditional to get the job done. Try a flattering color or an interesting cut or fun patterns & prints. Or try all three!

Finally, I would be remiss if I failed to mention my favorite male fashion blogger in this post, even though he doesn’t regularly post photographs of his own personal style, UK-based Stu Bradley of Not So Lonely Londoners {you may know him from his sensational How To Pose Like A Fashion Blogger post that swept the internet last Spring}.

Which of these menswear looks above is your favorite? And what is it about that particular look that caught your attention?

Styling 101: Starry Eyed + Trunk Show

Today’s Styling 101 post is all about picking a fun new print to give a try, and then running with it. Whether you’re a fan of polka dots, florals, or plaid there’s a way to stylishly play up that print or pattern – even across multiple pieces & accessories – without going overboard.

{Jewelry: Napier Gold-tone Luxe Ribbed Bracelet 1960s, Ciner Enamel and Rhinestone Bracelet 1980s & Star Earrings 1980s}

{You can shop similar pieces by clicking these hyperlinks: Black Pleated Mini Skirt – Zara, Star Print Tunic – Zara & Polka Dot Heeled SandalsAsos.com}

{You can also see this outfit on Lookbook.nu & Pose}

While I wanted this look to have a classic, art deco-type of feel to it, I also wanted it to showcase how fun patterns can be mixed into a look without overwhelming it – so here I combined a star-print tunic and a pair of navy & white polka-dotted sandals. By keeping the prints on the smaller side and separating them with a black skirt, I kept them from competing against each other and taking over the whole look.

Don’t forget that you can shop these fabulous 60′s & 80′s pieces over at the Sasha Maks Vintage website while they’re available – So hurry on over!

I’m also excited to announce that there will be a Sasha Maks Vintage Jewelry Trunk Show on Wednesday, November 14 from 6pm to 9pm – Baubles, Beauty & Bubbles Holiday Trunk Show. Looks of the Week

Compaired to the Looks of the Week: Pants Edition post last week the collection of looks below is a somewhat more versatile – With a killer jumpsuit, chic mini and maxi skirts, stylish pants in various fits and silhouettes, and fabulous outerwear from fashion bloggers and models around the world.

This is without a doubt the best look that I came across this past week. It’s striking, flattering, fashion-forward, and just plain fabulous – From the killer red jumpsuit to the silver spiked braid to the oversized clear clutch. Wow!

I love the combination of the white pleated maxi skirt & basic white tee paired with the bright, patterned jacket by Milly. It’s fun, unique look that makes me miss Summer!

What I love most about this look is the texture of the patent oxblood skirt combined with the matte, loose-fitted blouse. Oh, and those shoes. J’adore ankle straps!

This is such a feisty, rock n’ roll look – I LOVE her studded jacket and those buckle-adorned boots are totally killer!

This look is such a fun combination of colors, fabrics, and textures – It’s really eye-catching and fashiony, but still looks relaxed and comfortable.

There’s pretty much nothing more classic than a trench coat but leave it to Saucy Glossie to choose a leather sleeved version and pair it with a fun, eye-catching leopard print scarf. Great combination!

Black & brown can be a hard color combination to put together but when it’s done right it can be pretty striking. This silhouette paired with the 70’s inspired felt hat is a great look – Très français!

Which of these looks is your favorite? Are there any new trends or fun new styles you’re especially excited to try out this Fall?

Shenanigans

As I’m sure you’ve already picked up, I’m a big fan of Fall in general and Halloween in particular {Fall Fabulousness, All Hallow’s Eve & October Round-Up}. This year I was lucky enough to attend two fabulous Halloween parties in Sacramento as well as act as American River CrossFit’s team photograph for CrossFit West Sac’s charity Breast Cancer competition.

This year I was excited to dress up twice, the first time as Wendy from Peter Pan in a vintage yellow nightgown and the second time as The Black Dahlia in a fabulous little black dress that my friend made.

But don’t worry, I’m not the only one who dressed up for Halloween this year. Bones dressed up as a CHICKEN! Again. Clearly it’s his favorite costume, doesn’t he look enthusiastic?

{Mammograms In Action – Barbells For Boobs}

And the day before Halloween I watched the exciting Barbells For Boobs charity CrossFit competition which included every shade of pink known to man and even Jessica Rabbit in a stunning red gown.

How was your Halloween? What did you dress up as? What was the best costume that you saw?

MCLV Style File: Flower Power

Welcome to another Style File post – Our last outfit breakdown was a killer patterned black & white dress that Poppy Delevingne wore to Berlin Fashion Week and this time we’re going to check out a bright, fun outfit that’s a great way to transition to colder weather now that Fall 2012 is upon us.

{Lovely Pepa}

Throwing a floral blazer over a skirt & top combo is a great idea, it takes this from a basic Summer look to an eye-catching, colder-weather appropriate outfit that can easily be adapted to suit your style and the pieces that you have available in your closet.

The extras for this look are especially great – The long, layered necklaces, chunky bracelets, and oversized gold mens watch are lovely but that handbag is what really stole my heart.

{Indulgence to Savvy Shopper – Left to Right: Lc Lauren Conrad Floral Blazer – $50 (sale) @ Kohl’s, ASOS Premium Floral Print Blazer – $55 @ Asos.comTall Co-ord Floral Blazer – $130 @ TopShop}

The key to this look is the floral blazer, finding one that suits your coloring and shape may take some time, but it’ll be worth it since this is such a great piece for Fall.

{Indulgence to Savvy Shopper – Left to Right: Rachel Roy Quilted Wrap Skirt – $175 @ Zappos.com, Vince Camuto V-Neck Wrap Dress – $100 @ Shop The Shoe Box & BCBGMAXAZRIA Silk Ruffle Flounce Draped Skirt – $60 @ 6pm}

You could try a sweet blue wrap skirt for this look or you could opt for a cobalt dress and achieve a similar silhouette. It’s the bright colors and eye-catching accessories that make this look work so you don’t need to stress about copying it piece-for-piece.

{Indulgence to Savvy Shopper – Marmen Cross Necklace – $250 @ Urban Outfitters, House of Harlow Diamond Cross Necklace – $60 @ Designs By Stephene & Multi Row Cross Necklace – $20 @ Asos.com}

Whether you’re a fan of delicate necklaces or chunky, gold jewelry or silver, wearing a single chain or layering multiple pieces – There’s something fun in this style to suit your personal taste!

{Indulgence to Savvy Shopper – Vince Camuto Gold Boyfriend Watch – $175 @ Dillard’s, Gold and White Links Boyfriend Watch – $55 @ Asos.com & Merona Silver Tone Extra Large Boyfriend Watch – $20 @ Target}

A boyfriend watch is a funky alternative to a cuff or bangle, it adds a masculine touch without taking your look straight to made-for-the-boys territory. Gold or silver, embellished or plain, there are tons of options out there.

Curious how I would interpret this look using pieces that I have in my wardrobe? Tuesday’s MCLV Style: Factory Girl post was actually inspired by this look from Lovely Pepa!

This outfit is an oldie, but a goodie!

Things have been so hectic and non-stop since the beginning of September that I never got a chance to share with you the outfit that I put together for the pre-Fashion Week Fashion Mixer at The Factory in lovely SOMA.

Despite the fact that I put this outfit together over a month ago it actually looks pretty Fall-ready with the black accents and these too cute Rebecca Minkoff booties. I love wearing skirts and dresses during the Fall with layers on top and cute tights on the bottom. I’ve got a pair of black & grey skull-print tights that are in my closet begging to be worn!

Do you like printed or colorful blazers? Are you strictly a pants person once the weather turns colder or do you like to wear skirts & dresses in the Fall?
