Beginners Fitness: Medicine Balls

Welcome to the third week of the Spring 2013 Beginners Fitness series!

You can catch up on Beginners Fitness & Beginners Fitness: All About Kettlebells, or some other recent health & fitness-related posts – Guest Post: Women’s Health, Guest Post: Fashion of the Fitness World, Guest Post: Food & The Daily Battle, {Guest Post} Interview With A Trainer & {Guest Post} A CrossFit Year.

Another one of my favorite pieces of equipment at the gym are medicine balls – They’re versatile and since they can be used to work so many different muscle groups you can put together an entire workout using them.

Workouts:

If you’re starting a workout regime for the first time and consider yourself to be a beginner than you need to be sure to ease into a new exercise routine – Start with one workout a week plus walking, then two, and so forth.

Choosing your weight is one of the most important parts of a medicine ball workout – You want to be tired by the end of each set so don’t start with the heaviest weight you can pick up. You can also change weights for different moves – For example using a heavier ball for squats and a lighter one for core exercises.

[1.] Day One:

Warm Up: 5-10 minutes of cardio {Walking quickly, jogging/running, elliptical, stationary bike, rowing, stair climber…}

Warm Down: 5-10 minutes of cardio {Walking quickly, jogging/running, elliptical, stationary bike, rowing, stair climber…}

[2.] Day Two: Core Core Core!

Warm Up: 5-10 minutes of cardio {Walking quickly, jogging/running, elliptical, stationary bike, rowing, stair climber…}

Warm Down: 10-15 minutes of intervals on a machine of your choosing {See the suggestions under Warm Up}

  • 30 seconds as fast as possible
  • 1 minute 30 seconds recovery – moderate speed

Nutrition:

In the past two posts we’ve talked about healthy eating, how to replace unhealthy snacks with more nutrition options, and I suggested cooking as an alternative to eating out. Today I want to talk a little about fueling your workout – What you eat before a workout gives you energy and keeps your body hydrated & nourished while you put stress on it.

These are interesting articles and while they both highlight the importance of properly fueling your workouts they aren’t identical in their recommendations. Each body is different and it’s going to take some trial and error to find the perfect workout fuel for your body!

WorkoutFuel

Homework:

Rest days and stretching and/or foam rolling are an important part of working out. If you have the stamina to workout 7 days a week that’s admirable – But don’t! By not giving your body time to heal and rest you’re undoing all of your hard work. Check out The No Meat Athlete’s rolling tutorial to get you started – Foam Rolling.

Having a busy Spring? That’s no excuse to skip your workouts! You can easily do body weight circuits featuring moves like push-ups, squats, and sit-ups from a hotel room or utilize the hotel pool or drop-in deals for gyms & studios. Bonus? Getting in a workout  after a flight can help you fight jetlag! Read Mod City Mag’s Working Out While Traveling to give you some tips & suggestions for your next trip.

Spring 2013 Menswear Fashion

While mens styles tend to be more long-standing there are still some fun trends and pieces to keep in mind when you’re updating your wardrobe each season. And with the weather starting to edge towards Spring it’s time to consider how to dress for warm days and vacations!

Keep Things Interesting:

PlaidBlazer

A colorful or printed jacket or blazer is a great way inject some personality into your Spring looks this year – A plaid version like the one above is classic but still fun, which is a great combination since you’ll be able to wear it again another season.

If trying out a new color combination is on your To Do List be sure to check out The Sartorialist’s On The Runway: Maroon & Blue for some beautiful pictures from the Fall 2013 Collections.

The Spring 2013 runway shows features some great styles, bold colors, and interesting, eye-catching prints. Translating those styles to the street can be a challenge though so check out Well Groomed’s Spring 2013 Menswear Collections & Squidoo’s Men’s 2013 Spring Fashion Trends.

Accessories:

Up for a project? This colorblock tie from I SPY DIY is a great, quick option that’ll result in a wholly unique, one-of-a-kind accessory that you can really express yourself with – Colorblock Tie DIY.

There are a few quality pieces that every man should own – Nice shoes, classic wallet, a good belt… If you’re missing that last one be sure to educate yourself before you head out shopping by reading The Attire Club’s How To Choose A Good Belt.

Get creative and expand your options by learning some interesting new ways to knot your tie – Different Types of Ties from 9GAG: Life is a gag, make it fun.

MenswearHatSpring2013

Sometimes it seems as though the art of wearing a hat is lost – And then I see an amazing picture that reinforced my love of men in hats. Not sure how to make this work for you? Read The Art of Manliness’s Men’s Winter Hats: The Ultimate Guide to Cold Weather Headwear.

Tips & Suggestions:

Tailoring is one of the best ways that you can ensure that you look sharp. Even less expensive pieces will look like they cost more and are made of better materials if they fit like they were made for you. So shop around and find the right tailor for you. Read through this great series from Kolonel Mustard all about tailoring – The Tailor Project: Introduction & The Tailor Project: Parts 1 – 5.

Creating a clutter-free, organized space is the key to making dressing each day go smoother, faster, and more stylishly. If you can’t find what you’re looking for because nothing is hung up or if you forget that you own pieces because there’s so many outdated pieces crammed into your wardrobe your daily dressing will suffer. So take some advice from New York City based fashion blogger Scout Sixteen – On Organization.

MCLV Style: Rolled Jeans

One of my favorite looks right now is jeans with the hem rolled up paired with heels, flats, or even ankle boots. I just can’t get enough of this silhouette so I decided to give this style a try with a pair of pumps in a cute polka dot print. And with plenty of layers so I would survive the Northern California March weather!

We took these pictures in Old Sacramento – A fun, old timey tourist area in Downtown Sacramento. The buildings are adorable and there are so many fun historical backgrounds that I’m sure you’ll be seeing more soon of this part of town in future pictures! 🙂

Have you tried rolling your jeans so far this season? What’s the best look you’ve seen?

Spring 2013 Trend: Track Pants

My relationship with the current track pant trend is sort of like a high school relationship – It’s complicated.

On paper – I hate the idea. I like formality and classic styles so a trend that makes pants that could feasibly be worn to the gym appropriate street-wear isn’t necessarily ideal in my mind. That being said, I’ve found myself thoroughly enjoying some of the styles that I’ve seen put together lately.

My conclusion? I like them on other people, when worn right, but I will probably never head to the store expressly to buy myself a pair. It’s just not my style. But if this is your style than you’re in luck, I rounded up some great examples of just how to pull off this trend!

Enjoy the pictures my loves!

TrackPantsCamilleOverTheRainbow

{You don’t have to feel obligated to try this trend out in basic colors or fabrics – Get creative like Camille Over The Rainbow and try out a leather pair!}

TrackPantsFashionGuitar

{Want to make your look Spring-ready? Try layering florals like The Fashion Guitar for a fun, eclectic look.}

TrackPantsOnTheRacks

{Black & white plus a pop of color is a color scheme that can easily be applied to this track pant trend – On The Racks does it write in a Letterman sweater and aqua pumps.}

SONY DSC

{If you’re not a heel girl but want to add a feminine touch to your track pants than wedges are a great option. A graphic tee is another great way to add your own personal spin to a look.}

Where do you stand on track pants? Will you be giving this trend a try?

St. Patty’s Day Isn’t Just For The Irish…

I’ve always loved St. Patrick’s Day. Always.

Partially, I’m sure, due to my Irish background and the fact that my brother’s name is Patrick. And partially due to the fact that, after Halloween, this is the second most fun holiday all year. Like with Halloween you get to act like a kid {even The Huffington Post agrees that this is a good idea}, eat great food, and thoroughly enjoy yourself. Though obviously my celebrations have changed over the years – I went from a “Kiss Me I’m Irish” pin when I was 9 to Jameson shots until 2am when I was 23. Never a good idea on a Wednesday, let me tell you. But however I’ve celebrated over the years, it’s always been a fun, memorable celebration.

To help get you in the mood and prove that anyone can love St. Patty’s Day, here are some fun ways to celebrate – From fashion to try to recipes that’ll make you drool there’s a little something for everyone.

Food:

If you’re in the mood for some savory, traditional Irish grub but want to keep things on the healthier side than check out Fat Free Vegan’s Colcannon Puffs, Skillet Shepard’s Pie, and Vegan Cabbage Rolls.

MintChocolateCupcakes

Guinness Cupcakes w/ Bailey’s Irish Cream Filling sound like the PERFECT way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day to me, but if boozy cupcakes aren’t the way to your heart, than perhaps Mint Chocolate Cupcakes are the answer.

It doesn’t get more festive than Purely Twins’s St. Patty’s Day Inspired Green Mint Marshmallows {Sugar-Free}. Cute, green, AND sugar-free? These are at the top of my Must Make list.

Spring 2013 Hair Trends

I’m fairly hopeless when it comes to creating perfect waves or mastering chic updos – A simple {and I hope stylish} ponytail or bun is my go-to for pulling my hair out of my face on a daily basis. That being said, I love to try new ‘dos and am invariably drawn to the “so easy anyone could do it” type of tutorials.

In the hopes that I’m not the only one who could use some quick & easy expert tips for hair I’d like to share some of the tutorials I’ve collected recently that guarantee you’ll have a fun new look to add to your repertoire.

MCLV Style: Spring Stripes

This past weekend I had my very first Sacramento style shoot. I had some trepidation about arranging it – Would I forget things that I needed in San Francisco? Would we be able to find time? Would there be a good location to shoot? – It ended up not only going off without a hitch, but also being easy and fun.

We ended up at the entrance way to Sacramento’s fair grounds and played around with different backgrounds. The highlight of the shoot? My photographer laying in the street to get the shot that she wanted. If my smile looks strained it’s because I was terrified she was going to get hit by a car!

Style File: Peace Love Shea in Gucci

I fell madly in love with this look during the recent New York Fashion Week shows {Bloggers Do It Better: New York Fashion Week Street Style} and immediately started counting down the minutes until I’d have time to shop for similar pieces. And while I’m sure we’d all love to pick up this stunning Gucci outfit & Alexander McQueen coat, I thought I’d try to find something a little more reasonable on the price scale for us mere mortals.

PeaceLoveShea

{Peace Love Shea’s La Vie En Rose}

I love the matching, brilliantly colored top and bottom in this look as well as the chic white touches here. And while this coral is stunning on her, I also just like the concept of a look with an all-over color or print.

Coral Combo:

CoralSuit

{Slim Trouser – $39 @ Mango, Bow Blouse – $28 @ Mango}

These sweet Mango separates are a great choice – Not only do they look lovely together, they’re both great, versatile pieces in general and you’d be able to wear them all Spring.

Blue & White Floral Combo:

FloralSuit

{Printed Cuff Pant – $119 @ Bebe & Floral Print Blazer – $139 @ Bebe}

All-over prints are definitely my Achilles heel this Spring and I absolutely love these pieces. Not only do they look fabulous together, you can easily wear each with black, white, any shade of blue, or even a bright color like purple, fuchsia, or yellow.

Talk about versatile!

White Coat:

WhiteCoats

{Left: White Coat – $79 on sale @ Dorothy Perkins & Right: Tinley Road Classic Claudine Coat – $35 on sale @ Piperlime}

I love a chic white coat – It’s just so classic. So chic. So French!

PeaceLoveSheaDetails

{Peace Love Shea’s La Vie En Rose}

In addition to the amazing main pieces that make up this chic look, the accessories, while understated color-wise, are actually quite high-impact as well.

Clear Clutch:

ClearPlasticClutches

{The Ceres Clutch in Recycled Lucite – $95}

White Shoes:

WhiteHeels

{Pointed Ankle Strap Court Shoes – $44 @ Asos & Mossimo Ankle Strap Heels – $29 @ Target}

That clear clutch is perfection paired with the white heels and white coat – It all comes together to create a perfect look. I can’t wait to give this a try!

Finding fabulous new sites to enjoy is a favorite pastime of mine and I wanted to share my latest blog crush – Veblen High. I mean, seriously, with a description like this, how was I not going to become addicted?

WTF is a Veblen high? It’s a provoked state of intoxicating, stimulating, euphoria (similar to the effects of drugs/alcohol/sex) induced by the purchase of Veblen goods. Symptoms include high- feelings of relaxation, enchantment, pride, self-worth, dominance and a public display of social status.

Colorful and bold are always fun options when it comes to accessories but sometimes an outfit just screams for a neutral hued bag. Not sure where to start? Bag Snob of course – Best Beige Clutches: Caught Blushing.

{Guest Post} Spring 2013 Dress Trends

As you’ve probably figured out by now – I’m a big fan of dresses. Especially in the Spring. I’ve had visions of beautifully colored and print-covered dresses dancing through my head for months now – Since the Spring 2013 collections were shown actually. Today the writer of I Wish It Were Anthropologie, But…  will be sharing her Spring 2013 dress picks with us.

Enjoy!

WhiteLaceDresses

{Left – $128 @ Anthropologie & Right – $29 @ H&M}

Here’s the thing… I love Anthropologie but I don’t love the price. This white eyelet dress from Anthropologie is simple and chic, and can easily be dressed up or dressed down. But it is already over $100 for just the dress. You’ll still need to buy the tights, shoes, and accessories! In all it’ll put you well over $200.

I found a white eyelet dress from H&M for only $29.95. With that price you can easily find the rest of the pieces to complete the outfit for under $100.oo. Giving you a $100.oo for more shopping! Who doesn’t want that!

CoralDresses

{Left – $128 @ Anthropologie & Right – $40 @ Old Navy}

Now here is a nice coral eyelet dress that will be perfect for when it really starts to warms up this Spring! A versatile piece like this will be cute with either the boots or the flats and you can easily can add a cardigan to transform it into a work outfit. Again, choosing this Old Navy dress over the pricier Anthropologie version will give you almost $100 in savings.

You are really racking up the dough now!

MaxiDresses

{Left – $128 @ Anthropologie & Right – $30 @ Target}

This two-toned maxi dress has the same cut and color blocking style. However, the Target maxi has a pattern on the bottom and does not have pockets. Nevertheless these are quite similar style-wise and the Target dress will run roughly $100 less than the Anthropologie version.

There ya have it folks! Three amazing Spring-Summer looks, which save you $300.oo. Ready to get shopping? I sure am!

Sincerely,

Morgan Sabnekar

Are you guys as ready for Spring and pretty Spring dresses as I am after reading that? I absolutely love both eyelet and sweet lace for Spring, and that coral color is just beautiful.

Pencil Skirt: Day-To-Night

Pencil skirts are up there with wrap dresses, trench coats, and the perfect Little Black Dress when it comes to investment pieces. They’re a Must Have regardless of whether you’re in the market for a classic black skirt or something more dramatic and eye-catching

PencilSkirtMCLV

{Shop similar pieces by clicking these hyperlinks: Pencil Skirt – BCBG, Jacket – Banana Republic, Bag – Kate Spade & Heels – Very Volatile}

Not sure what style pencil skirt is the best option for you? Check out the fabulous finds below and see which skirts best suit your personal style and pocketbook!

Classic:

ClassicPencilSkirtsMCLV

{Left: Pencil Skirt in Jersey – $15 through $30 @ Asos, Center: Wool Pencil Skirt – $60 @ J.Crew & Right: Pencil Skirt – $50 @ Mango}

If you’re going for a more classic & timeless look or would like to pick a piece that’s work appropriate as well, I’d go with a classic color like black, navy, or grey. You can easily go from the office to cocktails by exchanging pumps for strappy heels, adding a chic cropped jacket, and piling on the statement jewelry.

Bold:

BoldPencilSkirtsMCLV

{Left: Emerald Pencil Skirt – $80 @ Banana Republic, Peplum Pencil Skirt – $50 @ Express & Right: Plaid Skirt – $60 @ The Limited}

These skirts are still perfect office-wear, but they’re also bold and eye-catching. Not for the faint of heart. Dress one of these brightly colored or printed skirts down for work with a tucked in button-down or party the night away in an embellished tank & fun heels.

Fun:

FunPencilSkirtsMCLV

{Left: Tinley Road Vegan Leather Pencil Skirt – $45 on sale @ Piperlime, Center: Neon Trimmed Pencil Skirt – $20 @ Forever 21 & Right: Jessica Simpson Floral Pencil Skirt – $40 on sale @ Macys}

A leather skirt is a fun option and when styled properly can easily work for day or night. Or you can try a fun printed option to spice up a weekend look. Either way, these dramatic skirts should be the focal point of your look so keep the accessories on the minimal side to avoid overdoing it.

So tell me, what’s your pencil skirt style – Classic, Bold, or Fun?

LookMazing + Banana Republic’s Mad Men Collection

I was thrilled when Banana Republic announced that they were planning to produce another Mad Men inspired collection this season. It’s funny, I love classic, retro styles and have adored & shopped these collections in the past, but I’ve never actually seen Mad Men.

Need to remedy that ASAP.

LookMazingFeature

In honor of my recent LookMazing feature {pictured above} and the fun Banana Republic pieces that I got a chance to try out, I wanted to share my favorite picks from this new collection.

CheckeredPantI

{Collection Hampton-Fit Gingham Crop – $100}

These pants are perfect for Spring 2013. Perfect for daytime wear with sandals or flats, a basic tee, and a brightly colored scarf, or for nighttime with heels, a sleek tank, and some statement jewelry.

JewelryCollage

{Left: Collection Beaded Necklace – $60 & Left: Collection Line Bracelet – $50}

Speaking of statement jewelry… Loved all of the Mad Men pieces but these were my favorite. I especially like the navy + green color combination in this necklace – Really classic & chic, but with a modern twist.

BalletFlat

{Collection Peggy Ballet Heel – $130}

I love a great pair of low-heeled pumps and the metallic embellishment on these is the perfect little touch to make these visually interesting and really stand out. You could easily wear these with a pencil skirt for work or paired with your favorite jeans & a leather jacket for a night out.

Don’t worry boys, I didn’t forget you. While the perfect suit is obviously a must have for the gentleman with style, the accessories are where you can really have fun and get creative. And Banana Republic’s Mad Men collection has some pretty darn cute extras for you to invest in!

MenswearCollage

{Left: Striped Silk Skinny Tie – $70 & Right: Straw Fedora – $50}

The navy looks great paired with both the black and the brown in these pieces and by including great striped accessories like these you’re opening up your look to incorporate additional colors.

Which pieces from this fun new collection are on your Must Have list?

Workouts:

Since this is just Week Two of this new fitness regime we’re going to keep the total number of workouts at two for another week – You want to ease into any changes in your activity level to avoid injuries or overworking yourself. If you feel like you’re ready to go beyond two, feel free to add one of the workouts from last week’s list – Beginners Fitness.

A great piece of gym equipment that I highly recommend is the kettlebell. It’s a very versatile piece since you can use them in a gym setting or at home/outside. Definitely a good investment.

Warm Up: 5 minutes of cardio {Walking quickly, jogging/running, elliptical, stationary bike, rowing, stair climber…}

Nutrition:

In the last post I suggested that you try cutting some of the processed foods out of your diet and cooking more, were you able to give that a try? Changing your routine and breaking habits is one of the hardest things that you can do, but knowing that you’re making strides towards improving your health and increasing your life expectancy should help motivate you.

Larabars

Here are a few more snack alternatives to not only help you GET COOKING, but also so that you can still enjoy some tasty snacks without reaching for processed or sugary store-bought treats:

  • I crave salty foods, especially when I’m under stress, so these Oven Fries from The Wannabe Chef are the perfect thing to reach for. Bonus points for using a sweet potato!
  • Do you crave a sweet treat in the afternoons? Give these Homemade Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Larabars from OhSheGlows a try next time you get peckish. You can also freeze them and then you’ll have a great treat whenever you want it!

Homework:

We talked about stress last time – Now that you’re aware of how important controlling stress is for your health, what are you doing to help combat it? Yoga is a much-loved stress reducer, but if you’re not up for a class there are still some moves that you can try out at home – Om Alone: At-Home Yoga Workout.

One of the best things that you can do for your health and one of the most powerful daily changes you can make is adding walking to your life. Check out this post on the benefits of walking {Guest Post: Low-Intensity Fasted Cardio} and this piece from Prevention Magazine – News Pulse: What A Simple Walk Can Do.

Bloggers Do It Better: New York Fashion Week Street Style

In past seasons I’ve tried to include a round-up of street style shots for each of the four major Fashion Weeks so that you can see what people are wearing to the shows and events, in addition to what’s being shown on the runway. However, as I’ve gotten more and more interested in fashion and started following more and more fashion blogs, photographers, fashion magazine editors etc. I’ve realized that my favorite street style is almost always the fashion bloggers.

Their style is somehow more real. Yes, some of them are getting gifts and swag and being lent clothes, but the way that they put looks together and pair pieces from their own wardrobe, and mix high & low is just plain inspirational.

Enjoy!

OutOfABook

{I’m having a love affaire w/ rolled pants this Winter – I love the silhouette whether it’s with heels or ankle boots}

WeWoreWhat

{This Tibi suit is one of my favorite power suits of New York Fashion Week. The bold hue, the cropped pants, the unique styling from We Wore What. Perfection!}

SongOfStyle

{I’m a total color junkie during Winter – I feel like it’s a great line of defense against seasonal depression. 🙂 And nothing about this fabulous floral + yellow look makes me 100% happy!}

Glamgerous

{Sweet, ladylike, classic. Amid all of the Fashion with a capital F during Fashion Week sometimes a look that’s just plain chic rules the day!}

OnTheRacks

{I’m a sucked for jumpsuits! I love this sapphire colored Rebecca Taylor jumpsuit paired w/ the perfect green coat and great cold-weather accessories. You can check out another one of On The Racks’s great NYFW outfits over on my IFBCON post when I was lucky enough to meet her! :)}

FashionSteele

{One of my favorite people to follow this season was Monroe Steele of Fashion Steele NY – In addition to putting together some killer looks, like this eye-catching white ensemble, she also looked like she was having a genuinely great time at all the shows. That kind of passion is just plain contagious!}

PeaceLoveShea

{LA-based Peace Love Shea always brings the drama when she heads to NYC and this look was head-to-toe perfection. Unfortunately the fact that this coral ensemble was Gucci had me utterly devastated since I couldn’t run out and buy my own asap.}

ChriselleFactory

{Animal prints are a great way to spice up your Winter looks and keep things sartorially interesting. This Thakoon Addition leopard print blazer & suit combo was of my favorites and I loved how the always impeccably Chriselle Lim styled her look.}

{When it comes to chic, perfectly styled looks Wendy of Wendy’s Lookbook is one of my favorites, I love the yellow & green color combination here, the statement necklace, and the timeless Givenchy Nightingale Satchel. Tres chic!}

MCLV Style: Emerald City

Since emerald was dubbed the color of the moment I dug this top out of the back of my closet for a recent sunny Saturday. When I got this piece I was actually a blonde and while it was quite pretty then I have to say I like it even better now that I’m a redhead. 🙂

{Check out outtakes from this shoot here – Just log into Facebook to view}

I’m enjoying this trend – Emerald’s a versatile color and looks great against virtually all skin tones and hair colors {as opposed to, say, mustard yellow}. It’s also a great choice if you’re adding a “pop of color” to a look because it’s so eye-catching and bold. If you’re in the mood to explore the emerald trend than check out some of the fun pieces below:

{Left: BCBG Blouse – $89 @ Bluefly, Top Right : Carry-All Pouch – $46 @ American Apparel, Center Right: Emerald Necklace – $30 @ Bauble Bar & Bottom Right: Mossimo Cap-Toed Heel – $25 @ Target}

Another trend I’m MAD about this Spring is metallics – Specifically metallic cap-tied shoes like these Mossimo heels. Emerald + metallic = Spring perfection as far as I’m concerned!

Are you a fan of this season’s emerald trend? Have you found any pieces that you like yet for Spring 2013?

{Guest Post} Interview With A Trainer

Happy Saturday and welcome to MCLV’s latest health & fitness post!

The goal of this series to help motivate us all to have a happy, healthy Spring. And to that point today I’m happy to be sharing with you an interview with a personal trainer, health & fitness nut, and one of the founders of the new Sacramento-based barbell gym Capitol City Strength & Conditioning. He’s joining us to answer some general – but extremely helpful – questions about eating habits, nutrition, working out, and other health & fitness related topics.

SeanMCLV

(1) Please tell us a little bit about your fitness routine (i.e How many days a week do you workout? What sort of workouts do you do?)

My personal routine varies greatly upon seasonal goals and lifestyle factors. Generally i focus primarily on Olympic lifting, training 4-5 times a week, a total of maybe 6-8 hours lifting. In addition to this I normally spend 30-60 minutes a day stretching and working on improving joint mobility. But my workout schedule is highly dependent upon social factors. If I am particularly stressed, I may substitute 1-2 lifting sessions for walking or reduce the overall volume.

(2) What are your long-term fitness goals?

My primary long-term fitness goal, I would say is to remain fully functional (i.e. running jumping, squatting, and fully able to play) well into my hundreds. If I had to think a little less long-term than that, I would say my overall goals are to maintain and or improve joint health and mobility while consistently improving my strength and power.

(3) When someone walks into your gym w/ no athletic or fitness background what are three exercises you would start them on? Why?

One, precursor I would have someone start with is to walk. I wont include this in my list of three, but ill mention it anyway. The benefit and value which simply walking for 30-60 minutes a day can have on almost anyone’s health is pretty impressive. I will generally recommend this to everyone regardless of their goals. But, in regards to someone who lacks much of a fitness background it can be especially useful. Anyways, on to the list (bear in mind these would be my recommendation for someone without any prior athletic history).

1-Lunge – A lunge is performed by stepping forward with one leg and dropping the rear knee to or close to the ground creating two ninety degree angles with both knees joints. Lunges can be a great tool. They are very easy to learn, with minor modification can be done safely by just about anyone with legs, and can be varied in many different forms to increase difficultly or maintain interest. Lunges are compound movement requiring several different muscle groups and require a degree of balance and coordination, two skills which are often overlooked, but when addressed can go a long way in injury prevention. Seeing that a vast majority of people, especially the older they get, have exceptionally poor mobility in the hips and ankles, lunges can help mobilize those joints in a safe and controlled manner will simultaneously promoting stability in the hip. Important safety note when performing a lung: do not let your front knee track beyond your forward toes and maintain an upright and neutral arch in your back. Squeezing your shoulder blades helps to reinforce this. Variations of a lunge can be done with barbells, dumbbells, to increase the difficultly or while holding onto something stable like a railing to make them more manageable.

2- Deadlifts – A deadlift is another compound movement, which is performed by picking up an object off the ground, generally a barbell, and standing fully upright. The deadlift is another great exercise which is a very effective tool to efficiently work much of your body. It is very easy to learn, but should definitely, and this can not be overstated, be taught by a knowledgeable professional. It is an excellent tool to strengthen muscles of the posterior chain (back side) and increase spinal stability. There is substantial carryover for the deadlifts to real life activities and significantly aid in decrease one’s chance of injury during normal activity. Like with the lung, always try to maintain a neutral spine and tight abdomen. Variations of the deadlift can be performed with dumbbells or kettlebells.

3- Shoulder press – A shoulder press is performed by vertically extending a weight from shoulder height to overhead, while maintaining a stable and static body. A should press is another great compound exercise because it will generally require you to move your shoulder through a full range of motion while simultaneously requiring you to remain stable and through your entire body. Like the deadlift, the shoulder press has a substantial carryover to everyday activity and can aid in injury prevention. Variations can be done with a dumbbell, kettlebell, barbell, or pretty much any weight.

(4) What’s some advice you’d like to impart to people who workout w/ out a trainer? (i.e. Tips, suggestions, recommendations)

Like every industry, trainers can run the spectrum from exception to downright hazardous. Trust your instincts and if a trainer ever asks you to perform a movement that your no comfortable with be, voice your concerns (back squats on a bosu ball are an excellent sign that you should find a new trainer). Just because someone has a certification does not mean they know what they are doing.

(5) What are your typical meals on a workout day? On a rest day?

Once again this is very dependent upon my goals and training program. On any typical lifting day, I will generally skip breakfast and eat pretty light throughout the day. Focusing primarily on fats and proteins. Chicken, avocado, ground beef, and eggs are typical. Immediately after I workout I will generally eat some type of lean meat and something starchy like white rich or sweet potatoes. And for dinner, I will typically stick to lots of proteins and fats with vegetables. Steak, chicken, or salmon, with broccoli or asparagus is pretty regular. But like I have said, this is completely dependent upon my goals. I’ve experimented with dinners composed of half gallons of whole milk and jars of peanut butter. On rest days I will generally eat in a similar fashion minus the carbohydrates after I workout.

(6) Is when you eat important? Tell us a little bit about why you time things the way you do.

Yes. But this can be highly dependent individual preference and lifestyle. I prefer to fast in the mornings till about noon, have my first meal start with a fatty dish, and follow my workouts with rapidly digestible carbs, and finishing with something high protein. Depending on your goals, what you eat and when you eat it can have a big impact on how your body functions. Why exactly I do each of those however is a very lengthy answer and ill have to save for another posting.

(7) If a client asks you for recommendations on changing their eating habits what are your usual suggestions? Anything you usually suggest adding or removing from their daily diet?

Almost regardless of a person’s goals, I try to encourage them to gravitate towards a whole foods (paleo-ish) based diet. I’m not a nutritionist, but asking people to not eat pop-tarts and pancakes is pretty much full proof. I will generally try to get people to drop bread and anything that doesn’t expire out of their diet, sticking primarily with good meats, fruits vegetables, nuts, and dairy (if you can tolerate it). Some people like the cold turkey approach, it works for some., but I generally prefer a gradual adjustment. I read somewhere it takes about 30 days to reinforce behavioral changes and I generally think asking people to change too much too fast leads to poor adherence. Small measurable changes make for better long-term progress, at least in my opinion. Maybe one month, cook every dinner, give up buying bread, next give up soda, ect ect. But then again this is very dependant upon personality

I hope that you enjoyed this point and maybe even learned something new that you can apply to your own routine. We’ll continue this healthy living series so be sure to stay tuned for more interesting tips, suggestions, and recommendations on how to think about your health & fitness routines to get maximum results.

MCLV Style: Formal Wear Done Right

After wearing the amazing gold sequined Badgley Mischka number a few weeks ago I decided to keep things a little more understated this time around and opted for this tiered black BCBG Max Azria number. But I kept the look from being too basic by pairing it w/ an orange & cheetah print clutch and a Betsey Johnson cape w/ a faux fur collar to keep me warm.

Are you a fan of black tie events? When was the last time that you wore formalwear?
