MCLV Style: Formal Wear Done Right

I adore getting dressed up whether it’s a pleated mini skirt for a date night or a Little Black Dress for a cocktail party. But when I get the rare opportunity to go full on black tie – I’m a happy happy girl.

After wearing the amazing gold sequined Badgley Mischka number a few weeks ago I decided to keep things a little more understated this time around and opted for this tiered black BCBG Max Azria number. But I kept the look from being too basic by pairing it w/ an orange & cheetah print clutch and a Betsey Johnson cape w/ a faux fur collar to keep me warm.

Are you a fan of black tie events? When was the last time that you wore formalwear?

MCLV Style: Valentine’s Day

Pink, peach, coral, tangerine… There are a number of beautiful, bright hues that one may associate with Valentine’s Day but I figured if I was going to get dressed up this year I was going to go all out in head-to-toe red!

{IFBCON} Celebrity Sightings & Industry Insight

Last September’s IFB Conference was a spectacular experience – Amazing speakers, inspirational speeches, more information than I could absorb, and the chance to rub elbows with passionate men & women who love fashion just as much as I do. Within moments of the tickets going on sale for this February’s conference I had bought the two-day pass and booked a plane ticket.

Excited, who, me?

I was lucky enough to assist the IFB team with some of the behind-the-scenes activities that help make an amazing event like this come together. Talk about a learning experience! Not only did I get to spend some time with IFB founder & The Coveted blogger Jeannine and IFB editor & Shut Up I Love That Shirt blogger Taylor Davies, I also got the chance to spend two days getting to know the other volunteers and got the opportunity to meet some of the speakers, sponsors, and panelists.

In other words – I was in heaven.

Celebrity Sightings:

While to some “celebrity sightings” might be limited to the Beyonces and Julia Roberts of the world, for us fashion lovers celebrity sightings can include our favorite bloggers and industry insiders whose work we read, Instagrams we <3, and whose photos we view daily. During IFBCON not only did I have a number of wide-eyed moments of mind blanking “omgomgomg” excitement, I also got some handshakes, hugs, and sweet words from some of my idols & unofficial mentors.

Laura Ellner of OnTheRacks – I’m a HUGE fan of On The Racks! I followed Laura’s adventures in San Francisco and while I hated to see her leave the Bay Area, I was excited for her New York City dreams to come true when she moved to the Big Apple last year. Needless to say I was worried that I’d have a fan girl moment if I got a chance to meet her. Luckily I kept my excitement under wraps when I said hello & introduced myself {nerdy happy dance} and I have to say, she’s even more stylish and striking in person than she appears online.

Aimee Song of Song of Style – Not only is Aimee stylish & beautiful, she’s also incredibly sweet. Her affiliate marketing panel was interesting & informative and she was beyond nice as she waited to go on stage and while she hung around for pictures afterwards.

SongOfStyleOnTheRacks

{There’s a reason they’re the best – Just look at them, utterly flawless!}

Justin Livingston of Scout 16 – While IFBCON was primarily filled with female fashion bloggers there were a few proud male fashion bloggers in the crowd and quite a few speakers & panelists of the male persuasion. One of the arrivals that I was greatly anticipating was the blogger known as Scout 16 – A New York staple who showed up in fabulous shoes, moderated his panel like a pro, and was really genuine & nice if you were lucky enough to meet him.

Liz Cherkasova of Late AfternoonStriking is the first word that comes to mind when I picture Liz’s entrance, she strode into the conference in head-to-toe brilliant pink. A shade that few mortal dare to wear, but was utter perfection on her. Her Evolution of the Industry panel may have been the last of the day but everyone was glued to their seats and hung on her every word.

Hilary Rushford of Dean Street Society – Not only do I adore her site {which I’m sad to say that I only recently discovered} but I was blown away by how inspirational & captivating she was on stage at IFBCON. And off the stage? Wow. Just wow. Beautiful & chic – Wearing the perfect little white dress with a fabulous statement necklace and a too-perfect-for-words fur shrug.

Lydia Hudgens & I SPY DIY – One of my favorite parts of the conference was the photography workshop put on by Lydia Hudgens – Photographer to some of NYC’s most popular fashion bloggers – And DIY master I Spy DIY. It was funny, easy to follow, and FILLED with great tips & ideas. I definitely have a girl crush on Miss Hudgens now! 🙂

There were SO many speakers & so much information being passed on that I’m sorry I couldn’t meet everyone and hear everything!

Looks of the Week – Cape Edition

My favorite piece this season has definitely been my fabulous Betsey Johnson faux fur-trimmed cape. I love the classic, old school glamour that a cape evokes. It goes great with jeans or over a dress, I even paired it with my favorite BCBG Max Azria floor-length gown. And clearly I’m not the only one who loves capes. So enjoy these fabulous looks!

Welcome to Moi Contre La Vie!

This is a fashion and lifestyle blog that features everything from personal style posts, menswear, shopping tips, and runway reviews to delicious recipes, workout ideas, and healthy living suggestions. Since there are so many topics & such a wide variety of information available to you I wanted to take some time to map out where you can find various things on either this blog or on social media.

{While there is some overlap, I try to make sure that each social media platform gets some individual attention each and every day}

MCLV:

While I like to maintain some freedom to be creative on the blog, there are a few recurring series that you can expect to usually follow a schedule.

  • Mondays – Looks of the Week (3-4 times a month): A weekly round-up of great looks from around the world

Rent The Runway Review

In my MCLV Style: Ballerina post I mentioned that my gold sequined Badgley Mischka gown had been ordered from Rent The Runway but it was such a fun, and easy, experience that I really wanted to devote an entire post to telling you about it.

I’m not going to lie – I was hesitant to try this service since I didn’t know anyone who had tried it, but once I got onto the website and started looking through the selection of dresses there was no turning back.

I picked my date. Chose my dress. And ordered.

I’m definitely going to utilize this service again in the future next time I need a fun gown for a one-time event. Maybe even for the next ballet event I’m hoping to attend in May to celebrate the opening of Cinderella.

Is Rent The Runway a website that you’d consider trying out? And if you have already tried it, was your experience as great as mine was?

Valentine’s Day Guide

Are you a lover of Valentine’s Day? I feel like enjoying Valentine’s Day is something of an art. Whether you have a significant other or are spending the day solo – There ARE things that you can enjoy about this “holiday.”

While I’ve had a boyfriend on a few Valentine’s Days over the years the most memorable one was actually a few months post-break up. I was with my Aunt and Uncle for a fun weekend of champagne, laughter, and too much chocolate – My uncle got me a giant heart filled with chocolates that was so big I couldn’t get my arms around it! To this day I keep a picture of my Aunt & I laughing so hard we’re nearly in tears from that night on my bedside table.

VDIV

Was I miserable because I was single? No. Was I wallowing over my recent breakup? No. Was I wearing pink? Hell no! 🙂

If you’re one of those lucky people who can ignore or even forget that it’s Valentine’s Day than congratulations, you’re much more evolved than I am. So, whether you’re looking for the perfect gift to surprise your partner with, deciding on a date night outfit, or just looking for a way to get through this in one piece, here’s a great collection of links and some of my own fool-proof ways to have a good Valentine’s Day!

Tips for enjoying yourself:

Make it a group thing! Another incredibly memorable Valentine’s Day was spent with my friend Lauren, we got all dressed up & went out to dinner just the two of us. Not only did we have a great meal and exchange fun, girly gifts, we laughed ourselves breathless listening to the date at the table next to ours.

VDIII

Suggestions For Solo Survival:

Pamper yourself – Spend a day giving yourself some much deserved attention & indulge yourself. Trust me, you’re worth it. 🙂 Head out for some shopping & get that killer pair of heels you’ve been eyeing. Get a fabulous mani/pedi or a soothing facial. Treat yourself to a relaxing massage to help reduce stress & tension.

Gift Ideas:

For me, the card is the most important part of a Valentine’s Day gift. I’ve gotten flowers, fancy dinners, and jewelry, but a sweet handwritten message in a card means more than any of the rest of that in my book.

Are you ready for Spring like I am? What’s your favorite Spring style?

I’m writing this post from chilly New York City where I’ll be attending IFBCON & getting swept up in the madness that is New York Fashion Week. If you want updates & pictures be sure to follow me!

Travel Time: NYC & IFBCON

At the beginning of last September I headed to sweltering New York City to attend my first IFB Conference and Fashion’s Night Out – The conference was such an amazing experience that I’ve decided to further my fashion blogger education with another once-in-a-lifetime trip back East.

{You can read about my trip & enjoy some fabulous Summer fashion from September here:  IFBCON PreparationIFBCON – Trends, Styles & Inspiration, MCLV Style: New York City, MCLV Style: IFBCON Day One, MCLV Style: IFBCON Day Two, and New York Fashion Diary}

FashionWeek

As with my trip in September a huge part of the fun – And the stress – Is deciding what to bring for the trip. Not only is New York City a fashion capital whose streets beg for killer footwear & fun, one-of-a-kind looks, the conference is also a chance to meet inspirational people within the industry and connect with other fashion bloggers – Some of whom may have been instrumental in you decision to start a blog in the first place.

Nerve-wracking.

I was right on the edge of beginning to panic when I read this amazing article from Hilary Rushford at Dean Street Society about similar anxieties & a solution to her own fashion crisis prior to attending the Alt Summit Conference in Salt Lake City – Why I’m Not Going To Win Best Dressed at Alt Summit. After reading it – And quickly becoming enthralled by her blog – I realized that she’s one of the speakers at IFBCON this week. How serendipitous!

FashionWeekIV

With Hilary’s permission to not win best dressed I decided that I needed a better way to approach the packing conundrum. Ultimately I know that for me picking out each piece & styling it in advance is the best way to go – That way I can relax and enjoy myself once I arrive. The other thing that I love is getting inspired by fashion magazines, other bloggers, and all the beautiful pictures I can find online.

Enter Pinterest. 🙂

FashionWeekV

The other thing that’s fun when you’re packing is to get inspired by the professionals. And by professionals I mean the fabulous fashion set who have been gracing New York Fashion Week {or IFBCON} with their presence for years – Jetset Style Guide – NYFW February 2013 from Hitha On The Go, Fashion Week Beauty Essentials from Late Afternoon, {What to Wear} To A Fashion Blogging Conference from Beautify My Life, 8 Looks Inspiring Our NYFW Wardrobe from Glittery Guide, and of course Bigger, Better, Bolder: What To Bring To IFB Con from IFB.

Have you ever gotten stressed out by the notion of getting packed for a trip? How did you calm yourself done & get yourself packed?

MCLV Style: Animal Prints

Nothing in the world is easier and more comfortable for a Saturday full of errands than leggings and a tunic. The main pieces in this look are the definition of basic black.

Are you a fan of mixing prints? What about mixing animal prints like I did here? How many different prints is too many in your opinion?

MCLV Style: Ballerina

While I’m not a huge proponent of mid-week nighttime outings, every once in a while an event comes up that begs for a later-than-normal curfew and is easily worth the groggy next day at work.

I started Moi Contre La Vie hesitantly and it was only as I received amazing support and positive feedback that I was able to go from posting once a week to 6-7 times a week. And I’m loving every minute of it!

Seven Things About Me:

  • Blogging is my passion project and while I would LOVE to be able to work in the fashion industry full-time I, like many others, have to have a day job to pay the bills. And buy purses. When the sun’s up my Clark Kent day job is as a compliance officer at a hedge fund in downtown San Francisco.
  • I double majored in Classics and History at UC Berkeley and wanted to get my PhD so that I could spend my life in a dusty library doing research & writing for publications like National Geographic.
  • While I love one-of-a-kind boutiques & the convenience of department stores if I could only shop one place for the rest of my life it would be Zara. I’m addicted. And I’m ok with that.
  • I’m a California girl through-and-through. I was born in Los Gatos, raised in Sacramento, and have lived the in Bay Area for over 10 years now {First in Berkeley, now in San Francisco}.
  • I never leave my apartment without putting on under-eye concealer, mascara & blush.
  • I lived in Rome for six months studying Art History when I was a junior in college. It was the most amazing experience of my life.

this looks like it's a painted background

{Serious throwback – This is my best friend & I in Athens when we were 21}

  • I’ve traveled quite a bit over the years – Some of the countries I’ve visited are Mexico, Canada, Belize, Dominican Republic, Italy, Greece, France, Czech Republic, Austria, Spain, Germany, the UK, Denmark, Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and the Philippines.

My Nominations:

This was a challenge for me – Narrowing down my list to five was not an easy task. I follow many, many bloggers and while I’ve been reading some for years, I decided to keep this list to newly discovered sites that I’m just getting to know, and absolutely loving.

So without further ado…

Last year I was equally excited to have been nominated as well – Check out my responses & suggestions last time around here.

MCLV Style: Striped Leopard

Mixing and matching patterned pieces can be such a creative exercise – Deciding what pieces go together, which prints would look good with which patterns, and putting the finishing touches on a look without going too over-the-top.

That’s my idea of a good time! 🙂

These peep-toe leopard print booties are a new acquisition. I was thrilled to discover that the Paragon Outlets in Livermore are not only close enough for a day-trip, they also feature outlets for Bloomingdale’s, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Barneys NY.

It’s heaven in other words, so stay tuned for more of my fabulous finds from this great girls trip to Paragon!

What are you favorite prints or patterns to mix?

Looks of the Week – Outwear Edition

Bold and dramatic outerwear is my current obsession – Whether you adore the classics or pieces with more a avant garde or boho vibe, you’ll love the fabulous examples below!

OhMyVogue

{Such a fabulous color – Bold & eye-catching. And I adore the belt!}

LovelyByLucy

{Fabulous prints like these are a great way to go – This subtle black & white oversized coat is just the thing!}

BeesWonderland

{Drama Drama Drama – This Maison Martin Margiela coat is about as head-turning as they come. Are you brave enough to rock something like this?}

VictoriaPlatina

{A faux fur collar is a great way to spice up a coat – It adds a touch of sophistication and a fun twist that can make a coat totally “you.”}

LotsOfLooks

{Animal prints can be a really fun print to try out – And finding a unique cut & silhouette like this one is a great way to go. Belting it? Makes it even more unique!}

MadameDeRosa

{I love the unique style of this piece – The print, the fringe, the silhouette}

What’s your favorite style of outerwear? Do you have a favorite piece that you just can’t get enough of this season?

MCLV Style: Embellish Me

Fun accessories and embellished pieces are a great way to take a basic look to a new level. So next time you’re putting together a nighttime look be creative and layer on the extras!

This outfit could have just been black skirt + black top but with the addition of brightly colored tights, an embellished collar, fun jewelry, and spiked heels it’s a more one-of-a-kind look. But I did discover that the downside of this too-cute pleated faux leather skirt from The Limited is that it wrinkles sooooo easily. And quickly. Thus the absence of straight-on shots!

What’s your favorite fun extra this Winter or the piece you’re most excited to try out?

MCLV Style: Lazy Stripes

Sometimes what a girl needs is layers. And lots of them. This was a look that I threw together for a CrossFit competition a few weeks ago – The keys for that kind of day are :(1) Comfortable, (2) Easy to move in, and (3) Warm! The third ended up being especially important as the venue had a huge open door and it started raining when we first got there!

I have a confession to make. This blazer is one of the oldest {non-heirloom} pieces in my closet. My mother bought it for me SEVEN years ago when she took me on a shopping trip to equip me for interviewing and starting my first post-collegiate job. When people say “classic” or “investment piece” this, my friends, is what they’re referring to!

Do you have any classic, it’ll-always-be-in-style pieces in your wardrobe? What’s your favorite investment piece that you’ve bought over the years?

Welcome To The Red Carpet…

Each Spring we get to witness the fabulous journey from red carpet to red carpet that the celebrities embark on that leads to the Oscars. Have I seen all the movies being nominated for & winning awards? Nope. Not even close. Do you know which gowns & frocks I love and which designers are killing it? Oh. Yes.

Here are some of the highlights of late!

AllisonWilliam

{I like this because it’s a one-of-a-kind take on a standard Little Black Dress and the answer to what to wear to a cocktail party.}

ChloeMoretz

{Cute. Eye-catching. Age appropriate. What more could you ask for from a young starlet?}

People's Choice Awards 2013 - Arrivals

{I adore a man in a suit, but with an endless parade of red carpets during awards season black and grey suit after black and grey suit gets a bit… Dreary. Three cheers for a man who mixing things up and likes to try great colors & textures. Precisely as the face of Burberry should!}

People's Choice Awards 2013 - Arrivals

{Flowy and white can frequently bomb on the red carpet. Too loose, too casual, too flower child… But this one is perfection. It’s all about the belt!}

People's Choice Awards 2013 - Arrivals

{Another black & gold number that killed it on the red carpet. Dramatic. Unique. Flattering. Perfect!}

People's Choice Awards 2013 - Arrivals

{Finding the perfect jewel toned gown isn’t easy and I can’t imagine a more beautifully colored dress than this one. And that silver collar? Swoon!}

People's Choice Awards 2013 - Arrivals

{Prints & patterns are such a breath of fresh air on the red carpet in a sea of princess-y frocks and this metallic black & silver number was especially stunning. And she wisely left the statement jewelry at home.}

Taylor

{Another fabulous white gown curtsey of Ralph Lauren. Lovely silhouette and a flattering hue, but those earrings were what really sold me. Just stunning!}

Kerry

{I LOVE Kerry Washington and she’s had some killer looks during her Django Unchained press tour – But this Giles gown is one of my favorites. It’s totally unique while still looking like it was made for her. Brava!}

And finally… Some Golden Globe goodness:

LucyLiu

{I love this dress! There was lots of back-and-forth on this one from the commentators, but I thought it was fun and a breath of fresh air!}

MichelleDockery

{Striking. Just striking.}

NaomiWattsI

{I love the drama here – The deep oxblood color, the neckline, the train… There’s a lot going on, but it works for her.}

AmyPoehler

{I LOVE pants on the red carpet. And I love women in tuxedos. This is simple but totally chic and timeless. Well done Amy, well done.}

HelenMirren

{Wow. It’s eye-catching and dramatic, but still age appropriate and utterly flattering. Gorgeous dress!, I love the gold embellishments.}

JessicaAlba

{This peach hue suits Miss Jessica to a T. It’s classic but the styling, jewelry & bag take it up a notch.}

JulianneMoore

{I love black & white on the red carpet. It’s sharp and eye-catching. And Julianne Moore knows JUST how to pull off this killer Tom Ford gown.}

TaylorSwiftI

{Flawless. The gown is a stunning color, suits her figure perfectly, and I adore the double straps, low back, and sheer stripe. Perfection!}

KateHudson

{Drama Drama Drama. When you want sophisticated, high fashion drama and glamour you know where to go – Alexander McQueen!}

KerryWashington

{I’m not usually a fan of sheer hemlines but I just love this sparkly Miu Miu number. It really stood out last night – Both on the red carpet and on stage – And it looks great on her.}

NicoleKidman

{And she’s back! I used to love everything that Miss Kidman wore on the red carpet but all the white lately hasn’t been my favorite – This however is killer. It’s busy, but she’s just the woman to pull it off!}

NicoleRichie

{Such a standout dress last night – This is the definitely of an eye-catching look!}

In my humble opinion there was a winning tie here… Jessica Alba in Oscar de la Renta {styled by the fabulous Brad Goreski} and Taylor Swift in Donna Karan Atelier. Both looked utterly striking and were styled to perfection. Well done to everyone though, there were virtually no disasters at this stylish event.

My only complaint? Where was Keira Knightley??? Her Chanel gowns for the Anna Karenina red carpets have been divine – I was dying to see what she was going to wear to the Golden Globes. Sob!

Curious about last year’s stand outs? Check out Golden Girls. And Boys. for the 2012 red carpet looks from the likes of Angelina Jolie, Evan Rachel Wood, Emma Stone, and Rooney Mara.

Which fabulous frock was your favorite?

{How KILLER is this look? Head-to-toe fabuous from the black & red color scheme to the fabulous baubles to the lace+leather+graphic prints.}

FashionFruit

{Doesn’t this look make you want to reach out and touch it? Love the vest paired w/ the vibrantly colored top. So dramatic!}

IMG_6958

{Too. Freaking. Cute. I love her vest & bag – But that hat is just plain WORKIN’ for me!}

TinasBlog

{While I do adore this mustard colored skirt it’s not what initially caught my attention. It was the cable knit sweater over blue plaid wit a killer statement necklace. The textures & colors here are fabulous!}

OhMyLooks

{Do I even need to caption this?}

Victoria

{Red. Hot. I love a power suit and is anything more enpowering than head-to-toe red? Tres chic!}

FashionSteeleNYC

{I’m currently in the midst of a full blown obsession with embellished skirts – Seriously, the bf is concerned for my well being – And feathers are high on my need-want-have-to-have list! I love how Fashion Steele NYC keeps this look from being too over-the-top by pairing it with a basic tee & blazer.}

Polienne

{I mean – Wow. Love the colors. Love the layers. Love the fabrics & texures. Just love!}

Lucy

{Tweed is one of my favorite Winter fabrics – It’s warm and has a certain destinguished Brit-vibe to it. I also love a one-of-a-kind suit like this one.}

Which look here in your favorite? Are you enjoying rich colors, fun fabrics, and interesting textures this season?
